The sensing properties of electrodes chemically modified with PEDOT/PSS towards catechol and hydroquinone sensing have been successfully improved by combining layers of PEDOT/PSS with layers of a secondary electrocatalytic material such as gold nanoparticles (PEDOT/PSS/AuNPs), copper phthalocyanine (PEDOT/PSS/CuPc) or lutetium bisphthalocyanine (PEDOT/PSS/LuPc). Layered composites exhibit synergistic effects that strongly enhance the electrocatalytic activity as indicated by the increase in intensity and the shift of the redox peaks to lower potentials. A remarkable improvement has been achieved using PEDOT/PSS/LuPc, which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of catechol.

Two different methods were used to obtain polypyrrole/AuNP (Ppy/AuNP) composites. One through the electrooxidation of the pyrrole monomer in the presence of colloidal gold nanoparticles, referred to as trapping method (T), and the second one by electrodeposition of both components from one solution containing the monomer and a gold salt, referred to as cogeneration method (C). In both cases, electrodeposition was carried out through galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods and using platinum (Pt) or stainless steel (SS) as substrates.

An array of electrochemical quartz crystal electrodes (EQCM) modified with nanostructured films based on phthalocyanines was developed and used to discriminate musts prepared from different varieties of grapes. Nanostructured films of iron, nickel and copper phthalocyanines were deposited on Pt/quartz crystals through the Layer by Layer technique by alternating layers of the corresponding phthalocyanine and poly-allylamine hydrochloride. Simultaneous electrochemical and mass measurements were used to study the mass changes accompanying the oxidation of electroactive species present in must samples obtained from six Spanish varieties of grapes (Juan García, Prieto Picudo, Mencía Regadío, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Tempranillo).

This work describes the sensing properties of carbon paste electrodes (CPES) prepared from three different types of carbonaceous materials: graphite, carbon microspheres and carbon nanotubes. The electrochemical responses towards antioxidants including vanillic acid, catechol, gallic acid, L-ascorbic acid and L-glutathione have been analyzed and compared. It has been demonstrated that the electrodes based on carbon microspheres show the best performances in terms of kinetics and stability, whereas G-CPEs presented the smallest detection limit for all the antioxidants analyzed.

This study describes the development of amperometric sensors based on poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc(2)) films assembled using the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique. The films have been used as modified electrodes for catechol quantification. Electrochemical measurements have been employed to investigate the catalytic properties of the LuPc(2) immobilized in the LbL films.

Lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc(2)) nanowires have been successfully obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The influence of the deposition conditions and annealing in the structure of the films has been studied by AFM, SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption, and near-infrared (NIR). The electrochemical properties of the EDP films immersed in different electrolytic solutions (KCl, MgCl(2), KClO(4), HCl, and NaOH) indicate that anions diffuse inside the film to maintain the electroneutrality and the kinetics follows the Randles-Sevcik equation.
