Purpose: Diffuse astrocytic tumors are the most frequently occurring primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Their histological sub-classification into diffuse astrocytoma (DA), anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) and glioblastoma (GB) is challenging and the available prognostic factors are limited to age and tumor subtype. Biomarkers that may improve the histological sub-classification and/or serve as prognostic factors are, therefore, urgently needed.

Introduction: We investigated the behavioral, respiratory, and thermoregulatory responses elicited by acute exposure to both hypercapnic and hypoxic environments in Wistar audiogenic rats (WARs). The WAR strain represents a genetic animal model of epilepsy.

Methods: Behavioral analyses were performed using neuroethological methods, and flowcharts were constructed to illustrate behavioral findings.

Context And Objective: The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the most common cause of infectious mononucleosis and is also associated with several human tumors, including Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, some cases of gastric carcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, among other neoplasms. The aim of this study was to screen 75 primary gliomas for the presence of specific EBV DNA sequences by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), with confirmation by direct sequencing.

Design And Setting: Prevalence study on EBV molecular genetics at a molecular pathology laboratory in a university hospital and at an applied genetics laboratory in a national institution.

Members of the Herpesviridae family have been implicated in a number of tumours in humans. At least 75% of the human population has had contact with cytomegalovirus (HCMV). In this work, we screened 75 Brazilian glioma biopsies for the presence of HCMV DNA sequences.

Medulloblastoma (MDB) is the most common malignant cerebellar tumor in children. Because of the significant rate of mortality and treatment-related morbidity, the identification of prognostic factors could lead to a more accurate selection of patients who can benefit from a less aggressive therapy and improve risk stratification. Survivin is an inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP), the expression of which has been associated with worse prognosis in MDB.

Multidrug resistance in gliomas is the major challenges in the clinical setting. We investigated the expression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and multidrug resistance-related protein 1 (MRP1) in 50 gliomas using immunohistochemistry. Compared to Pgp, MRP1 positivity was observed in highest percentage of gliomas grade IV samples (p = 0.

Background And Objectives: Snoring and apnea are social and medical problems that affect as many as 2% of adult women and 4% of adult men. This study compares collagen distribution and type with the intensity of snoring and the degree of drowsiness following uvulopalatoplasty with CO2 laser and radiofrequency ablation.

Study Design, Patients, And Methods: Fragments were taken from the soft palate by biopsies of 16 uvulopalatoplasty patients and 5 controls, 5 weeks after surgery, and they were stained with Sirius red and observed with polarization microscopy.

Objective: Cholesteatoma is a recurrent disease that is difficult control by otologists. This study aims to develop an experimental model of cholesteatoma that is easy to reproduce, using latex to induce the inflammatory reaction and propylene glycol as the foreign body in the middle ear.

Study Design: We used a new experimental model in which an intentional perforation was performed on the tympanic membrane of rats, followed by the introduction of a latex biomembrane.

Gliomas of astrocytic origin are the most common primary brain tumors, accounting for over 40 to 50% of all central nervous system tumors. The TP53 tumor suppressor gene is the most frequently mutated gene found in human malignancies. A mutation of this gene can lead to an increased half-life of the resulting protein and loss of biological function.
