Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is one of the most severe forms of wheat allergy. It occurs in patients when they exercise after ingesting wheat-containing foods. Nowadays, the only possible alternative for WDEIA patients is to avoid such foods.

Introduction: celiac disease (CD) patients have a specific pattern of lymphocytic infiltrate in the duodenal mucosa. Flow cytometry is a complementary tool for the diagnosis of CD, which allows the quantification and characterization of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) by what is commonly called a lymphogram. Here we describe our experience with this technique in the diagnosis of CD in adult patients.

Objectives: To detect whether signs of oxidative stress appear at early stages of colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC), particularly in the polyp stage. We also aimed to evaluate the specific entities myeloperoxidase (MPO) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) as novel markers of oxidation in the plasma of patients with CRC and to study the relationship between oxidative status in plasma and patient survival.

Methods: We assayed serum or plasma specimens from healthy control subjects (n = 14), from patients with intestinal polyps (n = 39), and from patients with CRC (n = 128) to calculate the modified oxidative balance score (MOBS) using several serum markers (β-carotene, lycopene, vitamin A, vitamin E, MPO, and oxLDL).

Article Synopsis
  • ApoD expression is inversely correlated with tumor growth in colorectal cancer (CRC), suggesting its potential as a prognostic marker and therapeutic tool.
  • The study examined the relationship between lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress-related gene expression, and ApoD levels in CRC tissues, finding that ApoD protein decreases as the tumor progresses.
  • While ApoD does not affect cell proliferation or apoptosis in normal conditions, it promotes apoptosis in CRC cells under oxidative stress, highlighting its role in the tumor microenvironment.

Purpose: Cytokines and other growth factors such as interleukins play an important role in the pathogenesis of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Interindividual variations in cytokine production seem to correlate with some cytokine gene polymorphisms. The purpose of this study was to analyse the distribution of these cytokine gene variants in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) with and without PVR.

Unlabelled: Forty-eight children with sepsis were studied. Interleukin-13 (IL-13) levels were lower in patients who died at admission (p=0.014) and at 6 h (p=0.
