Seeds collected from trees, shrubs and lianas growing on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, were analyzed for their content of phenolic compounds, oxidative activities and protein precipitation capacities. Proanthocyanidins and hydrolysable tannins were detected in one-third of 189 studied species. The most oxidatively active group of species were the ones containing prodelphinidins and ellagitannins whereas the species that had the highest protein precipitation capacity in relation to their total phenolics were the ones containing punicalagin.

In this study, we screened 287 plant tissue samples from 175 plant species for their phenolic profiles. The samples were oxidized enzymatically in planta or at high pH in vitro to determine how these two oxidative conditions would alter the initial polyphenol profiles of the plant. Compounds that contained a pyrogallol or dihydroxyphenethyl group were highly active at pH 10.

Elevational gradients affect the production of plant secondary metabolites through changes in both biotic and abiotic conditions. Previous studies have suggested both elevational increases and decreases in host-plant chemical defences. We analysed the correlation of alkaloids and polyphenols with elevation in a community of nine Ficus species along a continuously forested elevational gradient in Papua New Guinea.

The top-down and indirect effects of insects on plant communities depend on patterns of host use, which are often poorly documented, particularly in species-rich tropical forests. At Barro Colorado Island, Panama, we compiled the first food web quantifying trophic interactions between the majority of co-occurring woody plant species and their internally feeding insect seed predators. Our study is based on more than 200 000 fruits representing 478 plant species, associated with 369 insect species.

We developed a combination of methods to estimate the alkaline oxidative conditions of the midgut of insect larvae and to reveal the alkaline and enzymatic oxidative activities for individual phenolic compounds present in the larval host plants. First, we monitored the in vitro isomerization of 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) into 3-CQA, 4-CQA and 5-CQA at pH 9.0-11.

Escalation (macroevolutionary increase) or divergence (disparity between relatives) in trait values are two frequent outcomes of the plant-herbivore arms race. We studied the defences and caterpillars associated with 21 sympatric New Guinean figs. Herbivore generalists were concentrated on hosts with low protease and oxidative activity.

Rosebay willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium) contains large amounts of polyphenolic compounds, including tellimagrandin I-based oligomeric ellagitannins (ETs). The aim of this study was to assess the interpopulational and inter-organ variability of the polyphenol fingerprint of E. angustifolium.

We studied the possible roles of flavonoids in the antioxidant and antiherbivore chemistry in Jatropha curcas (L.), a Latin American shrub that holds great potential as a source of biofuel. Changes in flavonoid concentrations in the leaves of J.
