Dysbiosis of vaginal microbiota is associated with increased HIV-1 acquisition, but the underlying cellular mechanisms remain unclear. Vaginal Langerhans cells (LCs) protect against mucosal HIV-1 infection via autophagy-mediated degradation of HIV-1. As LCs are in continuous contact with bacterial members of the vaginal microbiome, we investigated the impact of commensal and dysbiosis-associated vaginal (an)aerobic bacterial species on the antiviral function of LCs.

Background: The molecular pathways involved in the transition from uterine quiescence to overt labour are mapped and form the currently established pharmacological targets for both the induction and inhibition of human labour. However, both spontaneous premature labour and functional dystocia occur and are difficult to treat adequately. The identification of upstream regulators involved in the onset and orchestration of labour pathways is essential to develop additional therapies that will contribute to the regulation of the timing of birth.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare cardiovascular profiles of women who had spontaneous preterm deliveries (sPTD) with those who delivered at term.
  • A total of 165 women with sPTD and 30 women who delivered at term were analyzed for various cardiovascular health indicators shortly after delivery.
  • Results showed lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels, but higher glucose levels in the sPTD group, suggesting a possible link to insulin resistance rather than unfavorable cardiovascular profiles.

Background: The number of women participating in the labor market in Europe has increased over the last several decades. At the same time, there is growing evidence that certain conditions of employment during pregnancy may have a negative influence on pregnancy outcomes. In order to better inform pregnant women, we aim to develop an app to help assess the health risk as a result of personal and work-related factors and provide personal advice for these women and their health care providers.

We assessed the influence of external factors on false-positive, false-negative, and invalid fibronectin results in the prediction of spontaneous delivery within 7 days.  We studied symptomatic women between 24 and 34 weeks' gestational age. We performed uni- and multivariable logistic regression to estimate the effect of external factors (vaginal soap, digital examination, transvaginal sonography, sexual intercourse, vaginal bleeding) on the risk of false-positive, false-negative, and invalid results, using spontaneous delivery within 7 days as the outcome.

Introduction: Fetal gender is associated with preterm birth; however, a proper subdivision by onset of labor and corresponding neonatal outcome by week of gestation is lacking.

Material And Methods: Data from the Netherlands Perinatal Registry (1999-2010) were used to calculate relative risk ratios for gender by week of gestation and gender-related risk on adverse neonatal outcomes using a moving average technique. White European women with an alive fetus at onset of labor were included.

Background: A common challenge in medicine, exemplified in the analysis of biomarker data, is that large studies are needed for sufficient statistical power. Often, this may only be achievable by aggregating multiple cohorts. However, different studies may use disparate platforms for laboratory analysis, which can hinder merging.

Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the relation among fetal gender, ethnicity, and preterm labor (PTL) and preterm delivery (PTD).

Methods: A secondary analysis was performed of a prospective cohort study including women with symptoms of PTL between 24 and 34 weeks. The proportion of women carrying a male or female fetus at the onset of PTL was calculated.

Objective: In a previous randomized trial that compared monitoring uterine contractions with an intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) versus external monitoring, we demonstrated that use of an IUPC did not improve the outcome of labor. To provide insight in the lack of a positive effect, we evaluated level of IUP in Montevideo units (MU) in correlation with dysfunctional labor and adverse neonatal outcome.

Study Design: Here, we present two secondary analyses on the 503 women who had IUP measured in the trial.

Objective The aim of this study was to assess which characteristics and results of vaginal examination are predictive for delivery within 7 days, in women with threatened preterm labor after initial treatment. Study Design A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial on maintenance nifedipine includes women who remained undelivered after threatened preterm labor for 48 hours. We developed one model for women with premature prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) and one without PPROM.

Thyroid autoimmunity with normal thyroid function is associated with recurrent miscarriage (RM), but the association with live birth is less clear. Therefore, we determined the association between thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) and live-birth rate (LBR) in a retrospective cohort of euthyroid women with unexplained RM. We included 202 women of which 28 were TPO-Ab positive (13.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Postpartum urinary retention (PUR) is a common consequence of bladder dysfunction after vaginal delivery. Patients with covert PUR are able to void spontaneously but have a postvoid residual bladder volume (PVRV) of ≥150 mL. Incomplete bladder emptying may predispose to bladder dysfunction at a later stage of life.

Studies using the placental transcriptome to identify key molecules relevant for preeclampsia are hampered by a relatively small sample size. In addition, they use a variety of bioinformatics and statistical methods, making comparison of findings challenging. To generate a more robust preeclampsia gene expression signature, we performed a meta-analysis on the original data of 11 placenta RNA microarray experiments, representing 139 normotensive and 116 preeclamptic pregnancies.

Objective: To assess the impact of cervical length (CL) measurement and fetal fibronectin testing (fFN) on the clinicians' decision to prescribe antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) to women with symptoms of preterm labor.

Study Design: This is a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study including women with symptoms of preterm labor and intact membranes between 24 and 34 weeks' gestation. We compared the proportion prescribed and completed ACS courses, preterm delivery within seven days and median intervals from ACS to delivery in four groups: group 1 CL<10 mm, group 2 CL 10-30 mm and positive fFN, group 3 CL 10-30 mm and negative fFN, group 4 CL>30 mm.
