We present a stereotaxic procedure enabling MRI-guided isocentric stereotaxy in pigs. The procedure is based on the Leksell stereotaxic arch principle, and a stereotaxic localizer box with an incorporated fiducial marking system (sideplates) defining a stereotaxic space similar to the clinical Leksell system. The obtained MRIs can be imported for 3D-reconstruction and coordinate calculation in the clinical stereotaxic software planning system (Leksell SurgiPlan, Elekta AB, Sweden).

Blockade of angiotensin II synthesis attenuates hepatic fibrosis in different experimental models of chronic liver injury. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of moexipril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) who have had a suboptimal response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Twenty PBC patients on UDCA (13-15 mg/kg/day) therapy with an elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase at least twice the upper limit of normal were treated with oral moexipril 15 mg/day for one year.

Aims: Preconditioning of stainless steel with aqueous cod muscle extract significantly impedes subsequent bacterial adhesion most likely due to repelling effects of fish tropomyosin. The purpose of this study was to determine if other food conditioning films decrease or enhance bacterial adhesion to stainless steel.

Exotoxin A (ExoA) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important virulence factor that belongs to a class of exotoxins that are secreted by pathogenic bacteria which cause human diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, pneumonia and whooping cough. We present the first crystal structures, to our knowledge, of ExoA in complex with elongation factor 2 (eEF2) and intact NAD(+), which indicate a direct role of two active-site loops in ExoA during the catalytic cycle. One loop moves to form a solvent cover for the active site of the enzyme and reaches towards the target residue (diphthamide) in eEF2 forming an important hydrogen bond.

To analyze the interaction between the neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor and G-protein coupled receptor kinases (GRKs), we performed bioluminescence resonance energy transfer(2) (BRET(2)) measurements between the family A NK-1 receptor and GRK2 and GRK5 as well as their respective kinase-inactive mutants. We observed agonist induced interaction of both GRK5 and GRK2 with the activated NK-1 receptor. In saturation experiments, we observed GRK5 to interact with the activated receptor in a monophasic manner while GRK2 interacted in a biphasic manner with the low affinity phase corresponding to receptor affinity for GRK5.

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga whose lineage diverged from land plants over 1 billion years ago. It is a model system for studying chloroplast-based photosynthesis, as well as the structure, assembly, and function of eukaryotic flagella (cilia), which were inherited from the common ancestor of plants and animals, but lost in land plants. We sequenced the approximately 120-megabase nuclear genome of Chlamydomonas and performed comparative phylogenomic analyses, identifying genes encoding uncharacterized proteins that are likely associated with the function and biogenesis of chloroplasts or eukaryotic flagella.
