[Practicing without a diploma, battling for a license: crossroads in the history of the professionalization of dentistry in Colombia].

This paper addresses the professionalization of dentistry in Colombia during the first half of the twentieth century. To fully comprehend such a process, we must consider the tensions between the practice of non-certified and certified dentistry. As an outcome of such tensions, dentists began to acquire professional autonomy.

[Colombia and the instrumentalization of the covid-19 pandemic].

In addition to the different forms of suffering caused by the covid-19 pandemic, a scenario emerged in Colombia in which business, educational and government spheres instrumentalized events. Although mandatory quarantine was the most widely-used method of containment, from the point of view of low-income citizens, it was perceived as a duality, the dilemma of "dying of hunger or coronavirus." Business, education and government sectors, however, saw the pandemic as an opportunity to establish and achieve new goals: encouraging virtual education, creating new enterprises, opening up new markets and misappropriating public funds.

[Defending entitlement: struggles and fate of the practice of homeopathy in Colombia (1905-1950)].

This article analyzes the practice and professional status of Colombian homeopaths in the twentieth century, based on applications for licenses in the "Teguas" series in the Archivo General de la Nación. Within the historical context of the practice of medicine in Colombia, it studies homeopathic practice within the framework of the debate between licensed and permitted medicine. In that context, the field of homeopathy was subordinate to university medicine and homeopaths were a group of practitioners who were neither homogeneous nor organized, but characterized by their shared struggle to become "entitled" to practice, and their advocacy of professional status through constant litigation against official reprimands.

Medicalizing delinquents or turning the mad into criminals?: Practices of alienation and legal medicine in Colombia in the early the 20th century.

This article analyzes medical-legal associations between madness and criminality in department of Antioquia (Colombia) during the three first decades of 20th century. The analysis was oriented by two overlapping axes: discourses and practices. The ideas of four doctors, generated between 1917 and 1925, were examined in order to identify the theoretical debates that delimited and defined mental illnesses in legal cases.

[Rhetoric of quantification: tuberculosis, statistics and the labor world in Colombia, 1916-1946].

This article examines the application of tuberculosis statistics in the Colombian medical discourse, the gap between these statistics and data officially published, as well as the relationship between the quantitative dynamics, the anti-tuberculosis campaign and the objectivation of tuberculosis in labor world in Colombia over the period ranging from the beginning of the campaign (1916) to the inclusion of tuberculosis in the list of professional diseases (1946). It also analyzes the critical role that labor statistics played in the first developments of the Colombian social security system and in the definition of professional diseases. These historical processes were studied according to its insertion in the international context.

[Parasite ethiology and epistemological obstacles: the case of malaria in Colombia].

In this article we show the process that led Colombian medicine toward the discovery and acceptance of the causes of paludism, a disease that still haunts the large hot and humid zones in the country. To carry out this process, a new generation of physicians had to overrule the old miasma theory and accept the vectors theory. In this regard, however, Pasteurian theory was also more of an obstacle than a condition for the emergence of a new research program.
