Central effects of the anabolic steroid 17alpha methyltestosterone in female anxiety.

The androgen 17alpha-methyltestosterone (17alpha-meT) is one of the most commonly abused anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). We assessed the impact of 17alpha-meT after bilateral infusion into the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) in female anxiety. A paradoxical effect in Vogel conflict test (VCT) behavior was noted: while AAS infusion induced an increase in the latency to display the appetitive reaction of the task, it also increased the number of punished responses.

Purpose: The main objectives of this study were to determine the differences between non-synchronized intraocular pressure (IOP_N) and intraocular pressure readings synchronized with cardiac pulse and try to determine if these parameters are related to blood pressure values.

Three different behavioral tasks were used to study the role of the neurosteroid 5alpha -androstane-3alpha, 17beta-diol (3alphaDIOL) in affective components of behavior when infused into the basolateral amygdala (BLA) of both sexes. Female rats were ovariectomized; half received implants containing estradiol benzoate (OVX-EB), whereas the other half received empty implants (OVX). Male rats were gonadally intact.

[Radiofrequency catheter ablation of left accessory pathways by transeptal approach].

Objective: To study a series of patients submitted to radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA) of left accessory pathways (AP) using the transeptal approach (TSA) as compared to the conventional retrograde arterial approach (RAA).

Methods: One hundred consecutive patients (56 male; mean age of 34.3 +/- 11 years) with 100 left APs (62 overt and 38 concealed) underwent catheter ablation using the TS method (50 patients) and the RA method (50 patients) in an alternate fashion.

Effect of post-polymerization heat treatments on the cytotoxicity of two denture base acrylic resins.

Introduction: Most denture base acrylic resins have polymethylmethacrylate in their composition. Several authors have discussed the polymerization process involved in converting monomer into polymer because adequate polymerization is a crucial factor in optimizing the physical properties and biocompatibility of denture base acrylic resins. To ensure the safety of these materials, in vitro cytotoxicity assays have been developed as preliminary screening tests to evaluate material biocompatibility.

Soft contact lenses for keratoconus: case report.

Purpose: Contact lenses have assisted the refractive correction of keratoconus since the 19th century. In these case reports, the authors describe their experience with a new soft contact lens design.

Methods: The Soft K is a new soft lens comprising a thick fenestrated design to fit in patients with mild to moderate corneal distortion and fitting problems or physical intolerance to rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses.

Clinical impact of oral health indexes in dental extraction of hemophilic patients.

Purpose: Periodontal disease in patients with hemorrhagic disorders may lead to severe bleeding during dental treatment. This study evaluated the clinical impact of oral health indexes in hemophilic patients undergoing tooth extraction.

Patients And Methods: Thirty-one hemophilic patients underwent teeth extractions using autologous fibrin glue and an oral antifibrinolytic drug (epsilon-aminocaproic acid).

Rectal procidentia treatment by perineal rectosigmoidectomy combined with levator ani repair.

Background/aims: Perineal rectosigmoidectomy has gained acceptance as a valid alternative to treat rectal procidentia with the advantage of decreased surgical risk, shorter recovery time, and lower complication rates when compared to abdominal approaches, although controversies still exist about its recurrence rates and functional results. This study aimed to evaluate the results of perineal rectosigmoidectomy combined with repair of the levator ani muscles to treat rectal procidentia.

Methodology: Forty-four patients who underwent perineal rectosigmoidectomy with levatorplasty for rectal procidentia between 1985 and 2000 were retrospectively analyzed.

Conservative treatment protocol of odontogenic keratocyst: a preliminary study.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to report our experience with the treatment of 30 odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) patients with a conservative treatment protocol based on decompression with reference to the recurrence rate.

Patients And Methods: Twenty-eight patients (19 females, 9 males) with 30 OKCs attended the OMS Department of the Piracicaba Dental School of Campinas State University between 1995 and 2003. Age range was 13 to 69 years (mean, 30 years of age).

[Left internal thoracic artery to left pulmonary artery fistula after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. A rare cause of myocardial ischemia].

We report a patient who developed dyspnea on mild exertion six years after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). Myocardial ischemia was documented by radionuclide imaging, and coronary angiography showed patency of all grafts and a large fistula between the left internal thoracic artery (LITA) and the left pulmonary artery (LPA). The patient was submitted to surgical closure of the fistula and made an excellent recovery.

Extensive focal epithelial hyperplasia: case report.

Focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH) is a rare benign lesion caused by human papillomavirus subtype 13 or 32. The condition occurs in numerous populations and ethnic groups. A higher incidence in close communities and among family members indicates infectious pathogenesis.

Bronchial rupture after intubation with double lumen endotracheal tube. Case report.

Background And Objectives: Tracheobronchial tree injuries are uncommon however severe complications after intubation or bronchoscopy. This report aimed at calling the attention to the difficult selective intubation, which has led to bronchial rupture associated to pneumomediastinum and hypertensive pneumothorax, with airway deformation and death by systemic inflammatory response.

A testosterone metabolite is rewarding to ovariectomized female rats.

Anabolic androgenic steroids have become a major class of drugs of abuse among a growing population of male and female adolescents. Although the rewarding and reinforcing properties of androgens have been demonstrated in male rodents, it is unknown whether these properties are apparent in female rats. In this study, conditioned place preference and self-administration paradigms showed that the endogenous androgen metabolite 3alphaDIOL is rewarding and reinforcing in ovariectomized female rats.

[Therapy of advanced heart failure adapted to hemodynamic objectives acquired by invasive hemodynamic monitoring].

Objective: To assess advanced heart failure (HF) treatment in relation to reduction of ventricular filling pressures, with the use of greater doses of vasodilators, through invasive hemodynamic monitoring.

Methods: Nineteen advanced HF patients were studied, in whom Swan-Ganz catheter was inserted to direct administration of diuretic intravenously (IV) and sodium nitroprusside, with the aim of significantly reduce ventricular filling pressures. After achieving such objective or 48 hours, oral drugs were introduced until venous medicines were removed, keeping hemodynamic benefit.

Characterisation of an acid trehalase produced by the thermotolerant fungus Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis: biochemical properties and immunochemical localisation.

An acid trehalase from Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis was purified to apparent homogeneity. The molecular weight by SDS-PAGE (60 kDa) or Sephacryl S-200 filtration (105 kDa) suggested a homodimer.

Liquid chromatography-diode array detection-electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry/nuclear magnetic resonance analyses of the anti-hyperglycemic flavonoid extract of Genista tenera. Structure elucidation of a flavonoid-C-glycoside.

The anti-hyperglycemic flavonoid extract obtained from Genista tenera was first studied by liquid chromatography (LC)-diode array detection (DAD) which showed the presence of two major compounds. One of them was identified as genistein-7-O-glucoside. Luteolin-7-O-glucoside was detected as a minor constituent, while luteolin-7,3'-di-O-glucoside and rutin were found in trace amounts.

Comparison of the ICare rebound tonometer with the Goldmann tonometer in a normal population.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) using a new induction/impact rebound tonometer (ICare) in comparison with the Goldmann applanation tonometer (AT). The left eyes of 46 university students were assessed with the two tonometers, with induction tonometry being performed first. The ICare was handled by an optometrist and the Goldmann tonometer by an ophthalmologist.

Primary intraosseous fibrosarcoma of jaw.

This paper reports one case of primary fibrosarcoma affecting the mandible in a 41-year-old woman. Microscopically, the tumor was cellularized with an intense mitotic activity, and areas of necrosis and hemorrhage, and the cells showed immunoreactivity only for vimentin, establishing the diagnosis of primary intraosseous fibrosarcoma. The patient underwent tumor surgical resection, supraomohyoid neck dissection and mandible reconstruction with fibula flap and titanium bar.

Modulation of elevated plus maze behavior after chronic exposure to the anabolic steroid 17alpha-methyltestosterone in adult mice.

Exposure to supraphysiological doses of androgens may disrupt affective components of behavior. In this study, behavior of adult C57Bl/6 male mice was studied after exposure to the anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) 17alpha-methyltestosterone (17alpha-meT; 7.5 mg/kg) via a subcutaneous osmotic pump for 17 days.

Denture hyperplasia with areas simulating oral inverted ductal papilloma.

Denture hyperplasia is a reactive lesion of the oral mucosa, usually associated to an ill-fitting denture. This lesion is easily diagnosed and in some cases distinct microscopic variations such as osseous, oncocytic and squamous metaplasia may be found. These metaplastic alterations probably are associated with the lymphocytic infiltrate usually present in denture hyperplasia.

The influence of cycloplegia in objective refraction.

The purpose of this study was to compare refractions measured with an autorefractor and by retinoscopy with and without cycloplegia. The objective refractions were performed in 199 right eyes from 199 healthy young adults with a mean age of 21.6 +/- 2.

Xylanases from fungi: properties and industrial applications.

Xylan is the principal type of hemicellulose. It is a linear polymer of beta-D-xylopyranosyl units linked by (1-4) glycosidic bonds. In nature, the polysaccharide backbone may be added to 4-O-methyl-alpha-D-glucuronopyranosyl units, acetyl groups, alpha-L-arabinofuranosyl, etc.

Surgical-handling properties of the titanium prosthesis in ossiculoplasty.

Despite the wide variety of ossiculoplasty techniques that are available, success rates are limited. Current use indicates that surgeons prefer ceramic, autograft bone, and plastic pore prostheses. During the past decade, titanium prostheses have been used with great promise.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in a 14-year-old boy: case report and review of the literature.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PSJ) is a relatively rare but well-recognized condition, with a prevalence of approximately one in 120,000 births in the USA. It is generally inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, although 35% of cases are new mutations. This disorder is characterized by melanocytic macules on the hands, feet, peri-oral skin and oral mucosa, and multiple gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps.
