Background: Direct common carotid puncture (DCP) is conventionally used as a bailout technique in stroke patients. However, little is known about the relevant anatomy. Our objective was to examine the relationship of the common carotid artery (CCA) to surrounding structures based on different DCP trajectories passing through the artery's center.

Objective: Cartilaginous tumors of the larynx are rare, representing less than 1% of all laryngeal tumors. Chondromas are benign mesenchymal tumors characterized by a slow-paced growth, primarily originated in the cricoid cartilage, followed by the thyroid, arytenoid, and epiglottic cartilages. This scoping review aims to understand the extent of evidence on the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, morbidity, and recurrence of the laryngeal chondroma (LC).

Objective: Studies suggest that transplant patients are at risk for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, there is limited information in the literature regarding frequency and reasons for failure of adequate medical therapy. We aim to determine the risk factors associated with the development of medically recalcitrant CRS requiring endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).

Background: Mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) is largely used worldwide prior to colostomy closure in children, although its benefits are questioned by scientific evidence, and its use can cause adverse reactions. We hypothesized that colostomy closure procedures in children are not associated with increased complications (surgical site infection [SSI] and anastomotic leakage) when performed without MBP. Thus, we conducted a noninferiority trial to compare the safety and efficacy of colostomy takedown with and without MBP.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver abscesses from amebiasis can lead to severe complications like empyemas if they rupture, necessitating effective treatment methods.
  • Surgical debridement or decortication shows better results than open surgeries, yet there's no clear guideline on the best approach for treatment.
  • This case report details a 39-year-old man's successful video-assisted thoracoscopy for an amebic empyema, emphasizing the importance of minimally invasive techniques, especially in areas with high rates of amebiasis.

Background: To evaluate and describe the radiographic imaging findings in a series of patients who underwent reintervention after radiation induced carotid artery stenting (RICAS).

Methods: A retrospective review of patients with prior RICAS and subsequent reintervention.

Results: We describe 10 patients including 8 male and 2 female patients with 12 reinterventions due to prior diagnosed radiation-induced carotid artery stenosis and subsequent stenting during the period 2000-2019.

(named in honor of the American bacteriologists Paul and Linda Baumann) is a Gram-negative, multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen that causes nosocomial infections, especially in intensive care units (ICUs) and immunocompromised patients with central venous catheters. has developed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial resistance, associated with a higher mortality rate among infected patients compared with other non- species. In terms of clinical impact, resistant strains are associated with increases in both in-hospital length of stay and mortality.

Death in cancer patients can be caused by the progression of tumors, their malignity, or other associated conditions such as sepsis, which is a multiphasic host response to a pathogen that can be significantly amplified by endogenous factors. Its incidence is continuously rising, which reflects the increasing number of sick patients at a higher risk of infection, especially those that are elderly, pediatric, or immunosuppressed. Sepsis appears to be directly associated with oncological treatment and fatal septic shock.
