Comparison of emergency airway management techniques in the performance of emergent Cricothyrotomy.

Introduction: Emergent cricothyrotomy (EC) is a rare and lifesaving procedure to secure a difficult airway when other methods have failed. Many techniques have been discussed in the literature. This study aimed to identify major techniques used to perform EC in a regional trauma center and evaluate outcomes associated with the techniques.

Intraoperative Retinal Changes May Predict Surgical Outcomes After Epiretinal Membrane Peeling.

Purpose: To investigate whether intraoperative retinal changes during epiretinal membrane (ERM) peeling affect anatomic or functional outcomes after surgery.

Methods: We measured retinal thickness using an intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) device in patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling for idiopathic ERM. Changes in intraoperative central macular thickness (iCMT) were compared with postoperative improvements in CMT and best-corrected visual acuity (VA).

Beyond a neurotransmitter: The role of serotonin in inflammation and immunity.

Serotonin (5-HT), a well-known neurotransmitter in the brain, also plays an important role in peripheral tissues, including the immune system. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that many different types of immune cells express the machinery to generate, store, respond to and/or transport serotonin, including T cells, macrophages, mast cells, dendritic cells and platelets. In addition, there is emerging evidence of a possible connection between T cells, serotonin and mood disorders.
