Purpose- Much has transpired since the last scientific statement on pediatric stroke was published 10 years ago. Although stroke has long been recognized as an adult health problem causing substantial morbidity and mortality, it is also an important cause of acquired brain injury in young patients, occurring most commonly in the neonate and throughout childhood. This scientific statement represents a synthesis of data and a consensus of the leading experts in childhood cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Introduction: Epilepsy is a serious and often lifelong consequence of perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAIS). Variable incidences and risk factors for long-term epilepsy in PAIS have been reported. To determine the incidence of epilepsy in PAIS survivors and report factors associated with the risk of developing epilepsy, a meta-analysis and systematic review of prior publications was performed.

Acute lung injury (ALI), developing as a component of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced in part by the neutrophil NADPH oxidase 2 (Nox2), have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ALI. Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated the development of pulmonary inflammation in Nox2-deficient (gp91) mice that was absent in WT mice in a murine model of SIRS.

Introduction: Since breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women, it is important to understand potential sites of metastasis, including rare sites that have not frequently been reported in the literature. As our cancer interventions improve, patients will live longer and we will potentially see unusual patterns of metastatic disease more frequently, as in our case of a woman with breast cancer metastasis to her urinary bladder.

Case Presentation: We report a case of a 77-year-old female with history of breast cancer, metastatic to bone, and recently diagnosed bilateral hydronephrosis, secondary to a new urinary bladder mass.

rHIgM22 is a recombinant human monoclonal IgM designed to promote remyelination, and it is currently in Phase I clinical trials in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In animal models of demyelination, a single low dose of rHIgM22 stimulates oligodendrocyte maturation, induces remyelination, preserves axons, and slows the decline of locomotor deficits. Natural autoantibodies like rHIgM22 typically bind to multiple antigens with weak affinity.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify clinical, radiological and immuno-histochemical factors that may help predict upgrade of invasive ductal cancers of no special type (IDC-NST) with a core biopsy grade of 2 to grade 3 on final histology.

Methods: A prospectively maintained database of ultrasound visible solid masses was used to identify lesions yielding a core biopsy result of IDC-NST grade 2 who underwent immediate surgery yielding a grade 2 or grade 3 tumour. Associations were sought between the source of patient (screening/symptomatic), core biopsy receptor status and imaging findings and the grade of the excision specimen tumour.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) plays an important role in control of locomotion, partly through direct effects on motoneurons. Spinal cord complete transection (SCI) results in changes in 5-HT receptors on motoneurons that influence functional recovery. Activation of 5-HT and 5-HT receptors improves locomotor hindlimb movements in paraplegic rats.

A plug and socket approach for tightening polyelectrolyte multilayers is introduced based on the use pendant β-cyclodextrin groups. Prototypical multilayers derived from poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) and β-cyclodextrin-containing poly(4-vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride) are described. Evidence for tightened multilayers has been obtained from gas permeation, swelling and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements.
