Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have created a detailed neuronal wiring diagram of the whole brain of a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), mapping over 5 billion chemical synapses between more than 139,000 neurons, to better understand brain function.
  • The study includes detailed annotations about various cell types, nerve pathways, and neurotransmitter identities, and the data is freely available for other researchers to use and explore.
  • By analyzing synaptic pathways and connections, the project helps illustrate how neural structures relate to sensorimotor behaviors, paving the way for similar studies in other species.

Near Real-Time Feedback (NRTF) on the patient's experience with care, coupled with data relay to providers, can inform quality-of-care improvements, including at the point of care. The objective is to systematically review contemporary literature on the impact of the use of NRTF and data relay to providers on standardized patient experience measures. Six scientific databases and five specialty journals were searched supplemented by snowballing search strategies, according to the registered study protocol.

Aim: To synthesize the impact of improvement interventions related to care coordination, discharge support and care transitions on patient experience measures.

Method: Systematic review. Searches were completed in six scientific databases, five specialty journals, and through snowballing.

Connections between neurons can be mapped by acquiring and analyzing electron microscopic (EM) brain images. In recent years, this approach has been applied to chunks of brains to reconstruct local connectivity maps that are highly informative, yet inadequate for understanding brain function more globally. Here, we present the first neuronal wiring diagram of a whole adult brain, containing 5×10 chemical synapses between ~130,000 neurons reconstructed from a female .

Background & Aims: Anorectal manometry (ARM) is a comprehensive diagnostic tool for evaluating patients with constipation, fecal incontinence, or anorectal pain; however, it is not widely utilized for reasons that remain unclear. The aim of this roundtable discussion was to critically examine the current clinical practices of ARM and biofeedback therapy by physicians and surgeons in both academic and community settings.

Methods: Leaders in medical and surgical gastroenterology and physical therapy with interest in anorectal disorders were surveyed regarding practice patterns and utilization of these technologies.

In this perspective analysis, we strive to answer the following question: how can we advance integrative biology research in the 21st century with lessons from animal science? At the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Animal Science, we share here our three lessons learned in the two decades from 2002 to 2022 that we believe could inform integrative biology, systems science, and animal science scholarship in other countries and geographies. Cultivating multiomics knowledge through a conceptual lens of integrative biology is crucial for life sciences research that can stand the test of diverse biological, clinical, and ecological contexts. Moreover, in an era of the current COVID-19 pandemic, animal nutrition and animal science, and the study of their interactions with human health (and vice versa) through integrative biology approaches hold enormous prospects and significance for systems medicine and ecosystem health.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in automated imaging now allow for the mapping of entire brains, with projects needing significant time for data proofreading due to their size.
  • FlyWire is introduced as an online platform that enables collaborative proofreading of neural circuits in fruit flies, utilizing 3D interactive tools for efficient editing from anywhere.
  • The platform encourages community participation, enhances data accuracy, and promotes faster scientific discoveries, showcased through the analysis of mechanosensory neurons' connectome.

The health care delivery landscape in the United States is changing as payment models consider both costs and health outcomes, which are key components of value in health care. Without evidence about the effectiveness and costs of rehabilitation interventions, it is difficult to judge the value of rehabilitation interventions. Understanding the short- and long-term costs associated with implementing a rehabilitation intervention and the intervention's cost-effectiveness compared with other alternatives is critical to supporting decision-making by policymakers, health care administrators, and other decision makers.

Sustained changes in mood or action require persistent changes in neural activity, but it has been difficult to identify the neural circuit mechanisms that underlie persistent activity and contribute to long-lasting changes in behavior. Here, we show that a subset of Doublesex+ pC1 neurons in the female brain, called pC1d/e, can drive minutes-long changes in female behavior in the presence of males. Using automated reconstruction of a volume electron microscopic (EM) image of the female brain, we map all inputs and outputs to both pC1d and pC1e.

Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) episodic memory impairments are common; however, it is not known whether these impairments are due to hippocampal pathology. Hippocampal Lewy-bodies emerge by Braak stage 4, but are not uniformly distributed. For instance, hippocampal CA1 Lewy-body pathology has been specifically associated with pre-mortem episodic memory performance in demented patients.

The monoclonal antibody 4B5 binds to a mucin-like antigen elaborated by respiratory epithelium of patients with non-small cell bronchogenic carcinoma. Several immunoassay formats were used to determine the presence of the antigen in lavage specimens. A qualitative immunodrop binding assay showed immunoreactivity in 37 (64%) of 58 specimens from patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
