Background: Folliculitis keloidalis (FK) is a chronic hair disorder commonly affecting males with afro-textured hair. It typically affects the nuchal area, but disease may also occur at extra-nuchal sites. Few studies have investigated the histopathological aspects of preclinical FK.

Aims: To describe the clinicopathological features of patients presenting with BCC in a cohort of South African patients.
Background: Although the association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and mucocutaneous diseases has been well studied within South African specialist centres, there is limited data from district-level hospitals. Available data may, therefore, fail to reflect the prevalence and full spectrum of dermatoses seen in people living with HIV (PLWH).
Objectives: To determine the prevalence and spectrum of dermatoses seen in PLWH.
Background: Specific language impairment (SLI) is difficult to identify because it is a subtle linguistic difficulty, and there are a few measures available to differentiate between typical and atypical language development in bilinguals. Sentence repetition (SR) has strong theoretical foundations and research evidence as a valid tool for the identification of SLI in bilinguals.
Objective: This study assessed the value of SR using peer group comparisons to identify Sepedi-English bilingual children at the risk of SLI.
Background: Skin cancer is a growing health concern worldwide. It is the most common malignancy in South Africa and places a large burden on the public healthcare sector. There is a paucity of published scientific data on skin cancer in South Africa.

Previous studies documented histological findings characteristic of seborrheic dermatitis in HIV-positive patients.
Objective: To expand current knowledge of the clinicopathological characteristics of SLD in South African HIV-seropositive individuals.

Dowling-Degos disease (DDD) is a rare genodermatosis primarily presenting with reticulated pigmentation of the flexures. Secondary features include comedones and atrophic scarring. We present a patient with histologically confirmed DDD whose predominant clinical finding was of comedones and scarring, with less prominent pigmentation, thus expanding the clinical spectrum of DDD.

There are a number of predisposing factors including perinatal asphyxia. The condition generally has a benign course with spontaneous resolution, but monitoring for metabolic complications, in particular the potentially life-threatening complication of hypercalcaemia, is critical.

The poor prognosis is attributed to late diagnosis and subsequent relatively high Breslow thickness, but also to an intrinsic biological aggressiveness. Scientific data on AM from the developing world are limited and a need exists to characterise the disease further in the South African (SA) population.

We report an unusual case of PASH syndrome in a patient with end-stagerenal disease (ESRD) who was successfully treated with the tumor necrosis factor inhibitor, adalimumab. The case underscores the challenges associatedwith the treatment of PASH syndrome as well as the ongoing search to establish a genetic basis for the syndrome.

It mainly affects patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on haemodialysis, but may rarely occur in the absence of ESRD in conditions such as primary hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, alcoholic liver disease and connective tissue disease.
Methods: We reviewed the records of all patients diagnosed with calciphylaxis while on renal replacement therapy at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa, between 1990 and 2014, to describe its presentation, course and final outcome.
Background: The PA skills of phonological blending and segmentation and auditory word discrimination relate directly to literacy and may be weak in English second language (EL2) learners. In South Africa, literacy skills have been found to be poor in especially EL2 learners.
Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of vowel perception and production intervention on phonemic awareness (PA) and literacy skills of Setswana first language (L1) learners.

These factors also influence investigations into possible causal relationships with TB.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe mucocutaneous conditions found in patients hospitalized with TB and to report associated factors.
A 5-day-old boy presented with cellulitis-like, fluctuant lesions since birth. Clinically, subcutaneous fat necrosis was suspected, but an infective lesion could not be excluded. By performing a fine-needle aspiration biopsy, a diagnosis was established within minutes.

The inflammatory dermatoses are a subgroup that presents diagnostic difficulties from both a clinical and a histopathological perspective. This study examines a particularly challenging subgroup of the inflammatory dermatoses, that is, perivascular dermatitis.
