Vitamin D is an important factor in bone metabolism. Animal studies have shown a positive effect of vitamin D supplementation on fracture healing, but evidence from clinical trials is inconclusive. A randomized controlled trial was performed to assess the effects of vitamin D supplementation on fracture healing using HR-pQCT-based outcome parameters.

The objective of this study was to examine associations between BBB leakage, cSVD, neurodegeneration, and cognitive performance across the spectrum from normal cognition to dementia. Leakage was measured with dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in 80 older participants (normal cognition, n = 32; mild cognitive impairment, n = 34; clinical AD-type dementia, n = 14).

Besides visible lesions, (pre)diabetes might also be associated with alterations of the intrinsic organization of the white matter. In this population-based cohort study, the association of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes with white matter network organization was assessed.

Since casts are often used during fracture treatment, they might affect the assessment of bone density, microarchitectural, and biomechanical parameters and the short-term reproducibility of those parameters, e.g.

These include adverse effects on injectability, viscosity profile, setting time, mechanical properties of the cement and bone resorption. We have synthesized a novel cement that is designed to address some of these drawbacks.

Due to limited resolution, radiographs don't provide detailed information regarding the bone micro-architecture and bone strength. Recently, assessment of in vivo bone density, architectural and mechanical properties at the microscale became possible using high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in combination with micro finite element analysis (μFEA).

We performed an exploratory study evaluating the association between early changes in densitometric, structural, biomechanical, and biochemical bone parameters during the first weeks of fracture healing and wrist-specific pain and disability at 12 weeks in postmenopausal women with a conservatively treated distal radius fracture. Eighteen patients (aged 64 ± 8 years) were evaluated at 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 weeks postfracture, using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT), micro-finite element analysis, serum procollagen type-I N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP).

However, clinical reports on the effect of COX-2 inhibition on fracture healing in humans have been variable and inconclusive. This review gives an overview of the published data and an advice when to avoid NSAIDs.

Because research on bone structure and bone strength in COPD patients is limited, the objectives of this pilot study were as follows: (1) to compare bone structure, stiffness, and failure load, measured at the peripheral skeleton, between men with and without COPD after stratification for areal bone mineral density (aBMD); and (2) to relate clinical parameters with bone stiffness and failure load in men with COPD. We included 30 men with COPD (normal aBMD, n = 18; osteoporosis, n = 12) and 17 men without COPD (normal aBMD, n = 9; osteoporosis, n = 8).
