Objectives: The efficacy and toxicity of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy only and their impact on laryngeal preservation and survival were studied in patients with supraglottic cancer.

Methods: Forty-four patients with newly diagnosed supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma (stage II, III, IV) were treated with either two to three cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin 100 mg/m2 on day 1 and fluorouracil 800 to 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 to 5, followed by radiotherapy (NC + RT group, from March 1995 to December 1999; median 68.7 Gy, 1.

The pigment synthesizing melanoma, so-called animal type melanoma, is a rare variant of melanoma that is characterized by prominent melanin production and an unpredictable prognosis. Congenital onset of this melanoma is exceedingly rare. A 2-month-old Korean girl had a black nodule and a satellite black macule on the scalp which were noticed at birth.

Objective: Several surgical procedures have been reported for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). We compared the results of treatments for CSDH obtained from one burr-hole craniostomy with closed system drainage with or without irrigation, two burr-hole craniostomy with closed system drainage with irrigation, and small craniotomy with irrigation and closed-system drainage.

Methods: Eighty-seven patients with CSDH underwent surgery at our institution from January 2004 to December 2008.

Purpose: This study sought to determine the feasibility and safety of induction chemotherapy with docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) triple combination chemotherapy (TPF) followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).

Methods: Patients with advanced NPC were treated with three cycles of induction chemotherapy. Docetaxel (70 mg/m2) and cisplatin (75 mg/m2) were given on day 1, followed by 5-FU (1,000 mg/m2) as a continuous infusion for 4 days.

KAI1 C-terminal interacting tetraspanin (KITENIN) is reported to promote metastasis in mouse colon cancer models. We investigated the role of KITENIN on the progression of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In a preliminary clinical study using resected tissues from head and neck SCC patients, KITENIN was highly expressed in tumors and metastatic lymph nodes, while KAI1 was more increased in adjacent mucosa than in tumor.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy of lateral or parallel pin fixation using 3 smooth Kirschner wires (K-wires) or smooth Steinmann pins for the operative management of displaced supracondylar humeral fracture in a consecutive series of children.

Methods: Sixty-one consecutive displaced or angled supracondylar humeral fractures (Gartland type II or III) in children (mean age, 5 years 6 months) treated by 2 orthopaedic surgeons between 2001 and 2004 according to the following protocol: close reduction under general anesthesia with fluoroscopic guidance and only lateral percutaneous pinning using 3 divergent or parallel Kirschner wires or Steinmann pins. Minimum 2 years' follow-up was done in all 61 patients (range, 2.

Conclusions: The concurrent administration of cisplatin and fluorouracil (CCRT) during radiotherapy after induction chemotherapy had better results than induction chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy alone (CT+RT) for overall survival, laryngeal preservation, and locoregional control in patients with locally advanced hyopharyngeal cancer.

Objectives: To report treatment results comparing CCRT with CT+RT in locally advanced hypopharyngeal cancer.

Patients And Methods: Sixty-six consecutive patients treated with curative intent were analyzed retrospectively.

Purulent chondritis of the laryngeal cartilage is defined as a chondritis of the laryngeal framework cartilage with abscess formation between the inner and outer perichondria. To the best of our knowledge, only 1 report of purulent chondritis of the laryngeal framework cartilage has been published previously in the English language literature. Our patient suffered from generalized weakness, myalgias, and sore throat for 1 month and hoarseness for 10 days before diagnosis.

uvi31+ is a sequence homolog of Escherichia coli bolA gene in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, identified as a UV-inducible gene. Here, the cellular function of uvi31+ was investigated by null mutant analysis. Deletion of uvi31+ led to a delayed germination of spore and defects in subsequent cell division.
