We investigated 106 feet in 84 patients in a prospective randomized series where the clinical and radiographic results of the original chevron osteotomy were compared to the same procedure with the addition of an adductor tenotomy in patients averaging 47 years of age and with a mean follow-up of 3 years. Clinically there was no difference in the satisfaction rate of the two groups, with 58 satisfied and partially satisfied in the 62 operated by chevron osteotomy alone, and 42 of 44 in the group where adductor tenotomy was added. The hallux valgus angle decreased by 7.

Is lunate collapse in Kienböck's disease a consequence of spontaneous revascularization, leading to focal osteolysis? A literature review of osteonecrosis in other locations such as the femoral head and bone allografts showed clearly that the loss of mechanical integrity is due to cellular processes which follow the spontaneous restoration of blood supply. We found no evidence in the literature that the lunate has been shown to be avascular at the time of collapse. On the contrary, increased osteoclastic activity has been reported.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of sonography in the detection of infection in loosened hip prostheses.

Materials And Methods: The normal capsular morphology in 15 asymptomatic patients with total hip replacements was studied sonographically. Sonograms were then obtained in 33 patients who had pain in the hip after arthroplasty and radiologic findings of loosening of the prosthesis.

The possible in vivo consequences of proteolytic activity found in pancreatic pseudocyst fluid was investigated experimentally using fresh vessels from rabbit and humans. Proteolytic pseudocyst fluid caused a pronounced and time-dependent decrease in breaking strength of fresh vessels. A destruction of the normal histological architecture and fragmentation of the elastic tissue of the vessel wall paralleled the mechanical findings.

In a two-part crossover study, ten healthy men drank a moderate dose of ethanol (0.80 g/kg) in the morning after an overnight fast or immediately after breakfast. The breakfast consisted of orange juice (150 mL), fruit yogurt (250 mL), two cheese sandwiches, one boiled egg, and one cup of coffee with milk and sugar.

In a prospective investigation the diagnostic accuracy of film-screen and digital radiography in rheumatoid arthritis of hands was compared. Seventy hands of 36 patients with established rheumatoid arthritis were included in the study. Each of 11 joints in every hand was evaluated regarding the following radiologic parameters: soft tissue swelling, joint space narrowing, erosions and periarticular osteopenia.

The present investigation reports an animal experiment the objective of which was to study the vascular topography of the periodontium and the peri-implant soft and hard tissues in the beagle dog. 2 beagle dogs were used. The right mandibular premolars were extracted and healing allowed for 3 months.

All patients operated upon for Morton's neuroma during 1991 who were examined with both magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography were included in this prospective study. The object of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of these two modalities. The preoperative diagnosis was purely clinical.

Methods and tools were developed and designed to give assistance when creating and maintaining decision support systems in which the knowledge part is represented as rules written according to the Arden Syntax. Methods have also been designed and developed to support the process of adding decision support systems to clinical systems.

We have karyotyped eight sporadic osteocartilaginous exostoses (OCE), a tumor type not characterized cytogenetically before. Five tumors had only normal karyotypes, whereas three displayed the following abnormal karyotypes: 46,XY,del(8)(q24.1); 46,XX,del(8)(q22), t(8;14)(q24.

Purpose: The purpose of this prospective randomized study was to compare percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) and operation as initial therapy with regard to technical results, primary and secondary patency, and effects on blood pressure and renal function in patients with atherosclerotic unilateral renal artery stenosis.

Methods: Fifty-eight patients who did not have diabetes, who were less than 70 years of age, and who had severe hypertension and significant stenosis were randomized to receive PTRA or operation. Angiography was performed 10 days, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment to verify patency, and blood pressure and renal function were simultaneously evaluated.

We measured the configuration of the femoral condyles on lateral radiographs in 100 consecutive, prospectively-studied patients with a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, with or without associated lesions of the menisci and collateral ligaments. The patients had mainly low-to-moderate activity demands, and in all the patients the cruciate tear was primarily treated non-operatively. A quotient was calculated from the measurements of sagittal depth and axial height in order to describe the geometry of the femoral condyles.

We have studied the effect of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) on the formation of osteocalcin and type I collagen in isolated human osteoblasts. IGF-I at and above 0.1 nM stimulated the formation of type I collagen as measured by the type I procollagen carboxyterminal peptide (PICP), in human osteoblasts, incubated for 72 hrs in serum free conditions.

An ATP assay using bioluminescence was evaluated for its ability in determining the cytotoxic effect of antileukemic drugs. Leukemic cells from 32 patients with ANLL were used to compare the ATP assay with the differential staining cytotoxicity assay (DiSC). Cells were incubated with doxorubicin, daunorubicin, idarubicin, mitoxantrone and ara-C in conditions that were adapted to mimic the in vivo exposure of leukemic cells to cytostatic drugs.

Twenty-nine patients, subjected to major abdominal surgery, were randomized to different types of postoperative fluid replacement, given on the basis of subcutaneous oxygen tension measurements (PscO2). One regimen consisted of crystalloids, the other of a combination of crystalloids and colloids (dextran 70). Perioperative fluid replacement was given according to clinical criteria and postoperatively according to polarographic PscO2 measurements.

Thirty-one patients with osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum humeri were followed for an average of 23 years. There were symptoms in about half of the elbows at the follow-up examination. Impaired motion and pain on effort were the most common complaints.

The incidence and magnitude of vertebral slipping after decompression for central lumbar spinal stenosis were determined in a prospective study of 60 consecutive patients. Mean patient age was 64 (35-83) years, and 35 patients were men. In all cases, laminectomy was performed using a facet joint preserving undercutting technique.

The nasal route is a convenient and simple way to administer peptides to humans. Absorption of the drug, however, requires passage of the substance through the nasal mucosa. This is a possible site of enzymatic degradation of the peptide.

The effect of 5-OH-1,4-naphthoquinone and 5,8-diOH-1,4-naphthoquinone, two quinones highly reactive with oxygen, was studied on HL-60 and HL-60R cells. The multidrug resistance developed by the doxorubicin-resistant HL-60 cell line did not prevent the cytotoxic effect of these compounds, at clinically relevant concentrations. An increase in cellular defenses against oxygen radicals seemed to be one of the features developed by HL-60R, since the homogenate from this cell line had only 65% of the ability of the original cell line to form oxygen radicals during doxorubicin reduction.
