Mendelian Randomization studies indicate that BMI contributes to various diseases, but it's unclear if this is entirely mediated by BMI itself. This study examines whether disease risk from BMI-associated sequence variants is mediated through BMI or other mechanisms, using data from Iceland and the UK Biobank. The associations of BMI genetic risk score with diseases like fatty liver disease, knee replacement, and glucose intolerance were fully attenuated when conditioned on BMI, and largely for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, and hip replacement.

Background: Transitioning to end-of-life care and thereby changing the focus of treatment directives from life-sustaining treatment to comfort care is important for neurological patients in advanced stages. Late transition to end-of-life care for neurological patients has been described previously.

Objective: To investigate whether previous treatment directives, primary medical diagnoses, and demographic factors predict the transition to end-of-life care and time to eventual death in patients with neurological diseases in an acute hospital setting.

The diversity of functional feeding anatomy is particularly impressive in fishes and correlates with various interspecific ecological specializations. Intraspecific polymorphism can manifest in divergent feeding morphology and ecology, often along a benthic-pelagic axis. Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) is a freshwater salmonid known for morphological variation and sympatric polymorphism and in Lake Þingvallavatn, Iceland, four morphs of charr coexist that differ in preferred prey, behaviour, habitat use, and external feeding morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder, but its biological causes are still not well understood.
  • A comprehensive study involving over 16,000 ET cases identified 12 genetic variants linked to the disorder, suggesting several potential causal genes, including CA3 and CPLX1.
  • The findings also reveal associations between ET and other conditions like Parkinson's disease, depression, and anxiety, which could lead to new therapeutic targets for treatment.

The genetic basis of the human vocal system is largely unknown, as are the sequence variants that give rise to individual differences in voice and speech. Here, we couple data on diversity in the sequence of the genome with voice and vowel acoustics in speech recordings from 12,901 Icelanders. We show how voice pitch and vowel acoustics vary across the life span and correlate with anthropometric, physiological, and cognitive traits.

Background: Recurrent in-frame insertions within exon 20 causing duplication of amino acids Tyrosine-Valine-Methionine-Alanine (YVMA) represent 80% of all alterations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). HER2 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), anti-HER2 monoclonal antibodies and HER2 directed antibody-drug conjugates have been evaluated in patients with mutated NSCLC. Limited data are available regarding the activity of these agents in exon 19 alterations.

Article Synopsis
  • Intracranial volume (ICV), measured through MRI or head circumference, is hereditary and linked to cognitive abilities and neurological disorders.
  • A genome-wide association study identified 64 genetic variants associated with ICV, explaining about 5% of its variation and pointing to 12 key genes involved in cranial conditions.
  • The study found that ICV is connected to brain region sizes and various traits, with Parkinson's disease linked to larger ICV and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) associated with smaller ICV.

Background: Despite multiple studies suggesting that low 25(OH)D-vitamin levels are associated with worse outcomes in critically ill individuals, attempts to mitigate the outcomes by fixed dose enteral supplementation unguided by baseline or target blood levels have been unsuccessful. Since a single measurement of 25(OH)D may not optimally reflect an individual's vitamin D status, we studied the plasma concentration of different vitamin D metabolites and their recovery during and following resolution of acute critical illness.

Methods: A prospective observational study including patients 18 years and older admitted to a mixed medical-surgical ICU in Reykjavik, Iceland, located at a high-northern altitude (64° N).

Background: The governance structures associated with health data are evolving in response to advances in digital technologies that enable new ways of capturing, using, and sharing different types of data. Increasingly, health data moves between different contexts such as from healthcare to research, or to commerce and marketing. Crossing these contextual boundaries has the potential to violate societal expectations about the appropriate use of health data and diminish public trust.

Research shows that bullying is a significant workplace issue. A previous study showed increased sickness-related absences among municipality employees during the Icelandic economic crisis in 2008. This led to the following research questions: has bullying and/or harassment increased between the time points of the study up to seven years after the crisis? Did bullying and/or harassment change depending on downsizing? Are quantitative job demands, role conflicts and social support connected to bullying and/or harassment at work and if so, how? The study is based on a four-wave longitudinal balanced panel dataset consisting of those who work within the education and care services operated by Icelandic municipalities.
