Korean Gastric Cancer Association-Led Nationwide Survey on Surgically Treated Gastric Cancers in 2023.

Purpose: Since 1995, the Korean Gastric Cancer Association (KGCA) has been periodically conducting nationwide surveys on patients with surgically treated gastric cancer. This study details the results of the survey conducted in 2023.

Materials And Methods: The survey was conducted from March to December 2024 using a standardized case report form.

Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition Criteria and Immunonutritional Status Predict Chemoadherence and Survival in Stage II/III Gastric Cancer Treated with XELOX Chemotherapy.

Backgroud: Adjuvant chemotherapy is crucial for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. However, various factors negatively impact chemoadherence, with malnutrition after gastrectomy being a critical determinant. This study aims to analyze the impact of malnutrition, assessed through the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and other immunonutritional indices, on chemoadherence and its subsequent effect on survival.

Adipose Tissue Quantification Improves the Prognostic Value of GLIM Criteria in Advanced Gastric Cancer Patients.

The present study investigated whether the risk of recurrence after curative surgery could be further stratified by combining the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria and changes in subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue mass after surgery in patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). This study retrospectively analyzed 302 patients with AGC who underwent curative surgery. Based on the GLIM criteria, patients were classified into malnourished and non-malnourished groups.

Predictive Factors for Symptomatic Dislodgement of Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage Catheter in Patients with Malignant Biliary Obstruction.

Purpose: To evaluate the factors that predict symptomatic dislodgement of a percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) catheter in patients with malignant biliary obstruction.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 572 patients with malignant biliary obstruction who underwent 733 PTBD catheter insertions between January 2010 and February 2015. The duration of catheter placement, approach site, location of the catheter tip, insertion angle, presence of a closed-loop pigtail, and tube diameter were evaluated.

Is wide excision really needed? Correlation between resection margin and recurrence in benign phyllodes tumors of the breast.

Purpose: Phyllodes tumors are similar to fibroadenomas in imaging and in pathological characteristics and are difficult to identify preoperatively. The purpose of this study was to analyze the recurrence rate after excision stratified by the surgical margin width and to propose and emphasize the "wait and watch" treatment strategy for benign phyllodes tumors.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with benign phyllodes tumors by surgical excision between January 2000 and December 2022 at our institution.

Percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy with single gastropexy using balloon-assisted tract dilatation: comparison with peel-away sheath.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG) with balloon-assisted tract dilatation (BATD) using a single gastropexy.

Methods: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board. From August 2018 to October 2022, 61 patients (53 male and 8 female, mean age 67 years, age range 27-90 years) underwent PRG with balloon-retained tubes for enteral nutrition.

Fluoroscopic Stent Placement as a Bridge to Surgery for Malignant Colorectal Obstruction: Short- and Long-Term Outcomes.

Purpose: To assess the outcomes of single-stage surgery following fluoroscopic stent placement for malignant colorectal obstruction.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 46 patients (28 male and 18 female; mean age, 67.2 years) who had undergone fluoroscopic stent placement followed by laparoscopic resection ( = 31) or open surgery ( = 15) for malignant colorectal obstruction.

Relationship of FDG Uptake of the Reticuloendothelial System with Tumor Immune Microenvironment and Prognosis in Patients with Gastric Cancer.

2-deoxy-2-[F]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) uptake of the reticuloendothelial system, including the bone marrow (BM) and spleen, on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has been shown to be a significant prognostic factor in diverse malignancies. However, the relationship between FDG uptake of the BM and spleen and histopathological findings, including the tumor immune microenvironment, has not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of FDG uptake in the BM and spleen with histopathological findings and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with gastric cancer.

Jejunogastric intussusception after totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer: a rare case report and review of the literature.

Jejunogastric intussusception (JGI) is a rare complication of gastric surgery, with most cases occurring in the form of long-term complications following gastric surgeries. We present a case of JGI in a 74-year-old man who presented with progressive abdominal pain and distention, and was admitted to our hospital. The patient had undergone a totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with a Billroth II gastrojejunostomy 9 days previously.

Expression of miR-221 and miR-18a in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and its clinical significance.

Purpose: Recently, microRNA (miRNA) has been evaluated to provide a new diagnostic and therapeutic modality hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other tumors. They are small non-coding RNA molecules that function as transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression by silencing target genes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of microRNA-18a, 221 (miR-18a, miR-221) expression in HCC formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue.

Appendiceal mucocele masquerading as an epithelial borderline ovarian tumor: a case report and literature review.

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare mucin-producing neoplasm of appendiceal origin. Due to its location and imaging findings, appendiceal mucocele is easily confused with tumors of the right adnexa. We present a rare case of a patient initially misdiagnosed with an ovarian tumor intraoperatively diagnosed as an appendiceal mucocele and successfully treated.

Mitigating grain growth in fully stabilized zirconia via a two-step sintering strategy for esthetic dental restorations.

Overall, 8-mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ), unlike 3YSZ, is optically transparent and stable against low-temperature degradation but has insufficient mechanical properties due to its large grain size. The influence of the grain size of 8YSZ on mechanical properties was investigated to develop an 8YSZ suitable for dental restoration. Modulation of the grain size and relative density was achieved via a two-step sintering (TSS) process, and the corresponding kinetic window was established.

Patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) often fail to complete full-course chemotherapy with a standard dose due to various reasons. This study aimed to determine whether body composition affects chemotherapy adherence in patients with CRC. The medical records of 107 patients with stage III CRC who underwent adjuvant folinic acid, fluorouracil and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) chemotherapy at a single center between 2014 and 2018 were analyzed retrospectively.

Purpose: Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 C (UBE2C) is known to show a causal relationship with cancer development and advancement. The role of UBE2C is to control the mitotic spindle checkpoint. Excess UBE2C has been identified in patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Clinical Efficacy of the Transradial Approach in Percutaneous Intervention for a Malfunctioning Arteriovenous Fistula.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of the transradial artery approach (TRA) for treating malfunctioning arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) in patients on hemodialysis.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted in this single-center study of TRA endovascular procedures in 73 patients (43 male and 30 female; mean age of 67.4 years (range, 42-92 years) with malfunctioning AVFs, between January 2008 and April 2019.

Predicting the Recurrence of Gastric Cancer Using the Textural Features of Perigastric Adipose Tissue on [F]FDG PET/CT.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between the histopathological and textural features of perigastric adipose tissue (AT) on 2-deoxy-2-[F]fluoro-D-glucose ([F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and to evaluate the prognostic significance of perigastric AT textural features in predicting recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with gastric cancer. Sixty-nine patients with gastric cancer who underwent staging [F]FDG PET/CT and subsequent curative surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Textural features of perigastric AT were extracted from PET images.
