Background: Safe and effective pediatric blood pumps continue to lag far behind those developed for adults. To address this growing unmet clinical need, we are developing a hybrid, continuous-flow, magnetically levitated, pediatric total artificial heart (TAH). Our hybrid TAH design, the Dragon Heart (DH), integrates both an axial flow and centrifugal flow blood pump within a single, compact housing.

Article Synopsis
  • Ascochyta blight, caused by a fungal pathogen, significantly threatens the global chickpea industry, particularly affecting Australia’s multimillion-dollar market through disease management costs and yield losses.
  • The disease was introduced to Australia in the 1970s and has since established itself with varying levels of aggressiveness among local isolates, including some that can severely impact even resistant chickpea varieties.
  • Recent genomic studies of 230 isolates revealed three main genetic clusters and indicated that highly aggressive traits emerged independently multiple times, suggesting that aggressiveness may be influenced by a combination of minor genetic factors and epigenomic variations.

Rhizostomeae research based on morphological approaches was reinforced and diversified by new techniques after the 1970s, including developing methodologies for phylogenetic analysis, the rise of the polymerase chain reaction, and the emergence of different sequencing technologies. Here, we summarize the contribution of morphological and molecular data to the study of the classification and phylogenetic relationships of Rhizostomeae in addition to the use of molecular data in studies at the population, species, and supraspecific levels. Throughout the history of the study of the Rhizostomeae systematics, morphological data have been neglected when it comes to phylogenetic inferences, which is reflected in the lack of a phylogenetic analysis of the taxa within Rhizostomeae based on phenotypic characters of the adult medusa.

To address the unmet clinical need for pediatric circulatory support, we are developing an operationally versatile, hybrid, continuous-flow, total artificial heart ("Dragon Heart"). This device integrates a magnetically levitated axial and centrifugal blood pump. Here, we utilized a validated axial flow pump, and we focused on the development of the centrifugal pump.

Mesoscale oceanographic features influence the composition of zooplankton. Cyclonic eddies can promote upwelling and production of gelatinous zooplankton, which play critical roles in ocean biogeochemical cycling. We examined variation in assemblages of thaliaceans (salps, doliolids and pyrosomes) among mesoscale oceanographic features at the tropical-temperate boundary of the East Australian Current (EAC) in Spring 2019 and Autumn 2021.

Cryptic species have been detected across Metazoa, and while no apparent morphological features distinguish them, it should not impede taxonomists from formal descriptions. We accepted this challenge for the jellyfish genus , which has a long and confusing taxonomic history. We demonstrate that morphological variability in medusae overlaps across very distant geographic localities.

The mechanisms associated with the ability of owls to fly silently have been the subject of scientific interest for many decades and may be relevant to bio-inspired design to reduce noise of flapping and non-flapping flying devices. Here, we characterize the near wake dynamics and the associated flow structures produced during flight of the Australian boobook owl (). Three individual owls were flown at 8 ms in a climatic avian wind tunnel.

Species of the box jellyfish (Cubozoa) genus Alatina are notorious for their sting along the beaches of several localities of the Atlantic and Pacific. These species include Alatina alata on the Caribbean Island of Bonaire (the Netherlands), A. moseri in Hawaii, and A.
