Article Synopsis
  • Nail diseases pose significant physical and emotional challenges, but diagnosing them is difficult due to vague clinical signs, prompting the need for better diagnostic methods like nailfold capillaroscopy.
  • This study aimed to analyze capillary changes in various nail conditions (like nail psoriasis and onychomycosis) and compare them to control groups based on demographic and clinical factors.
  • Results indicated that specific nail conditions show distinct capillary patterns, suggesting that nailfold capillaroscopy could be a valuable, noninvasive tool to help diagnose and manage nail disorders more effectively.

Background: It is hypothesized that scalp allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in women is commonly mistaken for other disorders due to overlapping symptoms and unique clinical presentations.

Objective: This study reviews the potential underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of scalp ACD and explores ways to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Methods: This study conducted an extensive literature review to identify diagnostic challenges, common misdiagnoses, and diagnostic approaches for scalp ACD, focusing on standard versus targeted patch testing techniques.

Nail psoriasis is associated with significant disease burden, negative impact on quality of life, and potential progression to psoriatic arthritis. Initiating timely and appropriate treatment is of the utmost importance, especially because nail disease may be more resistant to therapies than cutaneous psoriasis. This article reviews available intralesional, topical, and systemic treatment options for nail psoriasis, and discusses efficacy and safety of studied agents.

Utilization of telemedicine for dermatology has greatly expanded since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 500 new teledermatology studies published since 2020. An updated review on teledermatology is necessary to incorporate new findings and perspectives, and educate dermatologists on effective utilization. We discuss teledermatology in terms of diagnostic accuracy and clinical outcomes, patient and physician satisfaction, considerations for special patient populations, published practice guidelines, cost effectiveness and efficiency, as well as administrative regulations and policies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study looked back at 16 years of how doctors diagnosed and treated tinea capitis (a fungal infection of the scalp) in children at a teaching hospital.
  • - It found that doctors didn't follow recommended guidelines closely, particularly in using confirmatory tests and systemic medications.
  • - The authors suggest that pediatricians need more education to improve adherence to these guidelines and enhance treatment practices.

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disorder that may affect the skin, nails, and/or oral mucosa. Bullous lichen planus is a rare variant of lichen planus, which is even less common in the nails. We present a case of nail bullous lichen planus, in a 48-year-old male presenting with a 10-month history of onychodystrophy of all ten fingernails.

Introduction: Localized longitudinal erythronychia is defined as a single nail with a longitudinal red band extending the length of a nail plate. It has a broad differential of benign and malignant etiologies, and is rarely due to benign vascular proliferations.

Case Presentation: We present a unique case of nail unit arteriovenous hemangioma presenting as longitudinal erythronychia of the left thumbnail in a 76-year-old male.

Onychomycosis is a common nail infection. Terbinafine-resistant dermatophyte infections pose an emerging global public health concern, but few cases have been described in the United States. We retrospectively reviewed and characterized clinical, histopathological, and mycological features of patients with mycologically confirmed onychomycosis who failed oral terbinafine treatment for onychomycosis at a U.

Introduction: A discussion of safety of systemic treatments for nail psoriasis is lacking, particularly in reference to approval of new therapies assessed for nail outcomes. A review of safety profiles for agents commonly utilized for treatment of nail psoriasis is warranted to help inform treatment choices. The PubMed database was searched on 5 April 20235 April 2023, with articles discussing safety of nail psoriasis systemic therapies identified and reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has significantly changed how neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is diagnosed and managed.
  • The review highlights 13 OCT-derived biomarkers, finding that retinal fluid, especially intra-retinal fluid, negatively impacts visual outcomes and influences treatment plans.
  • Enhanced analysis methods, including artificial intelligence, could optimize the use of OCT for better patient-specific treatment and monitoring in nAMD.

Head and neck cancers are a significant global health burden, with radiation therapy being a frequently utilized treatment. The aim of this systematic review was to provide a critical appraisal of laboratory studies that assessed the effect of irradiation on the adhesive performance of resin-based biomaterials. The analysis included 23 laboratory studies obtained from five databases, with most studies using human enamel, dentin, or both, and bonding procedures involving the fabrication of direct restorations, standardized specimens, bonding of orthodontic brackets, and luting of endodontic fiber posts.

Blue nail discoloration is a distinctive clinical presentation, and diagnosis is challenging given the broad differential diagnosis. A comprehensive review of the literature describing blue discoloration of one or multiple nails was performed using the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. A total of 245 publications were included and grouped based on involvement of a single nail (monodactylic) or multiple nails (polydactylic).

Background: This pilot assessed transfusion requirements during resuscitation with whole blood followed by standard component therapy (CT) versus CT alone, during a change in practice at a large urban Level I trauma center.

Methods: This was a single-center prospective cohort pilot study. Male trauma patients received up to 4 units of cold-stored low anti-A, anti-B group O whole blood (LTOWB) as initial resuscitation followed by CT as needed (LTOWB + CT).

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares two surgical techniques for salvage radical prostatectomy: salvage Retzius-sparing robotic assisted radical prostatectomy (SRS-RARP) and salvage standard robotic assisted radical prostatectomy (SS-RARP), involving 72 patients across 9 centers.
  • Results show that SRS-RARP leads to better urinary function outcomes, with more patients achieving continence, using fewer pads daily, and returning to continence sooner compared to SS-RARP.
  • The findings suggest that SRS-RARP is a viable option for men with recurrent prostate cancer after unsuccessful primary treatments, and its benefits may encourage more frequent use of this technique.

Racial disparities in prostate cancer have not been well characterized on a genomic level. Here we show the results of a multi-institutional retrospective analysis of 1,152 patients (596 African-American men (AAM) and 556 European-American men (EAM)) who underwent radical prostatectomy. Comparative analyses between the race groups were conducted at the clinical, genomic, pathway, molecular subtype, and prognostic levels.
