Diagnosing urethral duplication including a novel radiological diagnostic algorithm.

Until this 24 -year -old male was sexually active, the small dimple on his penile glans had never required any consideration. However, persistent focal irritation during sexual intercourse compelled him to pursue medical attention. Following urological consultation he was referred for imaging evaluation that demonstrated urethral duplication.

Percutaneous CT-Guided Cryoablation of the Salivary Glands in a Porcine Model.

Purpose: To evaluate the imaging, histologic changes and safety of computed tomography (CT)-guided cryoablation of the parotid glands in a porcine model.

Materials And Methods: Unilateral CT-guided parotid gland cryoablation was performed in 5 juvenile miniature pigs. The ablated parotid glands underwent 2 cycles of 10-minute freeze and 5-minute thaw using three 17-g cryoprobes.

Use of negative pressure wound therapy with instillation in the management of cervical necrotizing fasciitis.

Background: Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is an aggressive infection that can be rapidly fatal if aggressive therapies are not initiated early. Negative pressure wound therapy has been established as an effective tool in promoting wound healing, but its use in the acutely infected wound has been avoided because it limits frequent irrigations and standard dressing changes.

Methods: We discuss a novel application of negative pressure wound therapy with instillation in an immunocompromised patient with extensive cervical necrotizing fasciitis.

Pharmacological protection of hearing loss in the mouse model of endolymphatic hydrops.

Objectives/hypothesis: Excitotoxic and related inflammatory injury are implicated in the spiral ganglion degeneration seen with Meniere's disease and endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). Excitotoxicity is initiated with glutamate elevation and associated with downstream increases in reactive oxygen species resulting in inflammation-mediated neuronal degeneration. This study tests the hypothesis that interruption of the initial and/or downstream aspects of excitotoxicity should provide hearing protection in ELH-associated hearing loss.
