Developing and testing Advance Choice Document implementation resources for Black African and Caribbean people with experience of compulsory psychiatric admission.

Background: Advance Choice Documents (ACDs) have been recommended for use in England and Wales based on evidence from trials that show that they can reduce involuntary hospitalisation, which disproportionately affects Black African and Caribbean people. Our aim was therefore to develop and test ACD implementation resources and processes for Black people who have previously been involuntarily hospitalised and the people that support them.

Methods: Resource co-production workshops were held to inform the development of the ACD template and two types of training for all stakeholders, comprising a Recovery College course and simulation training.

Isolation of phage-antibodies against Eimeria species that infect chickens.

Eimeria is one of the most economically important pathogens in poultry production. Diagnosis of infection has the potential to inform treatment and prevention strategies. Here, phage display technology was used to isolate single chain antibodies (scFvs) that had a broad specificity against oocysts from the seven pathogenic species of Eimeria found in poultry.

Transitioning to Neoadjuvant Therapy for Resectable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Trends and Surgical Outcomes in a Regionalized Pulmonary Oncology Network.

Background: Several regulatory agencies have approved the use of the neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy for resectable stage II and III of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and numerous trials investigating novel agents are underway. However, significant concerns exist around the feasibility and safety of offering curative surgery to patients treated within such pathways. The goal in this study was to evaluate the impact of a transition towards a large-scale neoadjuvant therapy program for NSCLC.

Lung cancer in Nunavik: How are we doing? A retrospective matched cohort study.

Background: Whether Inuit in Canada experience disparities in lung cancer survival remains unknown. When requiring investigation and treatment for lung cancer, all residents of Nunavik, the Inuit homeland in Quebec, are sent to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), in Montréal. We sought to compare survival among patients with lung cancer at the MUHC, who were residents of Nunavik and Montréal, Quebec, respectively.

Atomic structure of a nudivirus occlusion body protein determined from a 70-year-old crystal sample.

Infectious protein crystals are an essential part of the viral lifecycle for double-stranded DNA Baculoviridae and double-stranded RNA cypoviruses. These viral protein crystals, termed occlusion bodies or polyhedra, are dense protein assemblies that form a crystalline array, encasing newly formed virions. Here, using X-ray crystallography we determine the structure of a polyhedrin from Nudiviridae.

Active learning of reactive Bayesian force fields applied to heterogeneous catalysis dynamics of H/Pt.

Atomistic modeling of chemically reactive systems has so far relied on either expensive ab initio methods or bond-order force fields requiring arduous parametrization. Here, we describe a Bayesian active learning framework for autonomous "on-the-fly" training of fast and accurate reactive many-body force fields during molecular dynamics simulations. At each time-step, predictive uncertainties of a sparse Gaussian process are evaluated to automatically determine whether additional ab initio training data are needed.

Neoadjuvant Prehabilitation Therapy for Locally Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: Optimizing Outcomes Throughout the Trajectory of Care.

Background: Prehabilitation is well established for improving outcomes in cancer surgery. Combining prehabilitation with neoadjuvant treatments may provide an opportunity to rapidly initiate cancer-directed therapy while improving functional status in preparation for local consolidation. In this proof-of-concept study, we analyzed non-small-cell lung cancer patients who underwent simultaneous prehabilitation and neoadjuvant therapy.

Comparison of costs related to infant hospitalisations for spontaneous, induced and Caesarean births: population-based cohort study.

Objective This study examined hospitalisations and associated in-patient costs for babies during the first year of life following spontaneous labour, compared with labour induction or prelabour Caesarean section, at each gestational age. Methods Birth data for singleton liveborn babies from 33 weeks gestation in New South Wales from 2005 to 2014 were linked to hospital and death data. Generalised linear models were used to examine the association between the type of labour and the length of hospitalisations and hospital costs.

Association between Dietary Intake and Lipid-Lowering Therapy: Prospective Analysis of Data from Australian Diabetes, Obesity, and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab) Using a Quantile Regression Approach.

Lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) should be accompanied by dietary guidance for cardiovascular risk reduction; however, current evidence suggests sub-optimal dietary behaviors in those on LLT. We examined the associations between the dietary intake of key food groups (vegetables, fruit, cereal, protein, and dairy) and LLT use in Australian adults using quantile regression. We used data from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab), a prospective population-based study of adults aged ≥25 years, conducted over 5 years (1999-2005).

Perceived Links Between Playing Surfaces and Injury: a Worldwide Study of Elite Association Football Players.

Background: Injuries in association football (soccer) are debilitating for players and can also be detrimental to the success of a team or club. The type or condition of a playing surface has been empirically linked to injuries, yet results are inconclusive. The overall purpose of this study was to analyse elite football players' perceived links between playing surfaces and injury from a worldwide cohort of players.

Alpha-fetoprotein in pericardial, peritoneal, and pleural fluids: A body fluid matrix evaluation.

Objectives: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) measurement in pericardial, peritoneal (ascites), and pleural fluids is sometimes requested by clinicians as supportive evidence in the evaluation of suspected malignancy. As commercially available, Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared AFP assays are not validated for these fluid types, laboratories must complete additional validation studies to comply with regulatory requirements for body fluid testing. The objective of this study was therefore to conduct a matrix evaluation for these body fluid types using the Beckman Access AFP assay on the UniCel DxI 800 immunoassay system.

Clozapine-induced cardiomyopathy and myocarditis monitoring: A systematic review.

The use of clozapine requires monitoring the absolute neutrophil count because of the risk of agranulocytosis, but other potentially fatal adverse events associated with clozapine (specifically, myocarditis and cardiomyopathy) do not have mandatory procedures. We performed a systematic review of English-language articles to synthesize an evidence-based approach for myocarditis and cardiomyopathy monitoring. Articles published from January 1988 through February 2017 were identified through a search of Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Ovid Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.

Targeting RET in Patients With RET-Rearranged Lung Cancers: Results From the Global, Multicenter RET Registry.

Purpose In addition to prospective trials for non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) that are driven by less common genomic alterations, registries provide complementary information on patient response to targeted therapies. Here, we present the results of an international registry of patients with RET-rearranged NSCLCs, providing the largest data set, to our knowledge, on outcomes of RET-directed therapy thus far. Methods A global, multicenter network of thoracic oncologists identified patients with pathologically confirmed NSCLC that harbored a RET rearrangement.

Adaptive working memory strategy training in early Alzheimer's disease: randomised controlled trial.

Background: Interventions that improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease are urgently required.

Aims: To assess whether a novel cognitive training paradigm based on 'chunking' improves working memory and general cognitive function, and is associated with reorganisation of functional activity in prefrontal and parietal cortices (trial registration: ISRCTN43007027).

Method: Thirty patients with mild Alzheimer's disease were randomly allocated to receive 18 sessions of 30 min of either adaptive chunking training or an active control intervention over approximately 8 weeks.

Incubation of ovine scrapie with environmental matrix results in biological and biochemical changes of PrP(Sc) over time.

Ovine scrapie can be transmitted via environmental reservoirs. A pool of ovine scrapie isolates were incubated on soil for one day or thirteen months and eluted prion was used to challenge tg338 mice transgenic for ovine PrP. After one-day incubation on soil, two PrP(Sc) phenotypes were present: G338 or Apl338ii.

Liver function testing on the Abaxis Piccolo Xpress: Use in Ebola virus disease protocols.

Background: Laboratories that choose a point-of-care approach for liver function testing in patients undergoing evaluation for Ebola virus disease (EVD) have few options to choose from. The primary objective of this study was to conduct a performance characterization of a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-waived liver function panel on the Abaxis Piccolo® Xpress chemistry analyzer. The secondary objectives were to evaluate multiple specimen types, characterize whole blood specimen stability, and validate disposable exact transfer pipettes.

We examined the need for ethnic- and gender-specific equations for estimating fat free mass (FFM) from BIA in children from different ethnic groups and examined their effects on the assessment of ethnic differences in body fat.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of children aged 8-10 years in London Primary schools including 325 South Asians, 250 black African-Caribbeans and 289 white Europeans with measurements of height, weight and arm-leg impedance (Z; Bodystat 1500).

Background: In order to elucidate the individual and community health burden of body dissatisfaction (BD), we examined impairment in quality of life associated with BD in a large, general population sample of women.

Volatile substance misuse: an updated review of toxicity and treatment.

Educational campaigns and legislative actions may have led to an overall decrease in the prevalence of volatile substance misuse (VSM) in many countries; however, it is still a common practice throughout the world. Studies currently suggest that girls are misusing volatile substances more than before and at a prevalence rate equal to or exceeding that of boys in several countries. Products that may be misused are ubiquitous and relatively easy to acquire.

Acute, sustained chorea in children after supratherapeutic dosing of amphetamine-derived medications.

Amphetamine-derived medications are being prescribed with increasing frequency to younger pediatric patients to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Although choreiform movements were reported in adults with amphetamine abuse and in those under therapeutic treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, previous literature concerning the pediatric population is spare. We describe two children who developed chorea after ingesting amphetamine-derived medications prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Quality of life impairment in a community sample of women with eating disorders.

Objective: Studies of quality of life among individuals with eating disorders have relied almost exclusively on clinical samples. We examined impairment in quality of life in a community sample of women with eating disorders recruited as part of an epidemiological study.

Methods: Measures of health-related quality of life (Medical Outcomes Study 12-item Short-Form Physical and Mental Component Summary scales) and subjective well-being (WHOQOL-BREF Psychological Functioning and Social Relationships subscales) were completed by women with eating disorders (n = 159), primarily variants of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, and a comparison group of healthy women (n = 232).
