Our research shed light on the distribution, number, and impact of small reservoirs (SRs) on rural dryland water availability and hydrology. We measured the storage capacity, relationship to environmental variables, and effects on the hydrology of all SRs (1225) found within a Sonoran Desert basin. SRs were predominantly associated with Tertiary conglomerates and Quaternary alluvium and were less common in extrusive rocks.

Indigenous societies are known to have occupied the Amazon basin for more than 12,000 years, but the scale of their influence on Amazonian forests remains uncertain. We report the discovery, using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) information from across the basin, of 24 previously undetected pre-Columbian earthworks beneath the forest canopy. Modeled distribution and abundance of large-scale archaeological sites across Amazonia suggest that between 10,272 and 23,648 sites remain to be discovered and that most will be found in the southwest.

Tupí-Guaraní is one of the largest branches of the Tupían language family, but despite its relevance there is no consensus about its origins in terms of age, homeland, and expansion. Linguistic classifications vary significantly, with archaeological studies suggesting incompatible date ranges while ethnographic literature confirms the close similarities as a result of continuous inter-family contact. To investigate this issue, we use a linguistic database of cognate data, employing Bayesian phylogenetic methods to infer a dated tree and to build a phylogeographic expansion model.

Objectives: We report the results of this phase I study to evaluate the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and safety of veliparib, a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, combined with carboplatin and paclitaxel induction chemotherapy (IC) for locoregionally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).

Materials And Methods: In a 3 + 3 cohort design, patients with stage IVA-B human papillomavirus-negative HNSCC received 2 cycles of carboplatin (AUC 6, day 1), paclitaxel (100 mg/m, days 1, 8, 15) and veliparib (days 1-7) every 21 days followed by standard curative-intent chemoradiotherapy. In the highlands of southern Brazil an anthropogenitcally driven expansion of forest occurred at the expense of grasslands between 1410 and 900 cal BP, coincident with a period of demographic and cultural change in the region. Previous studies have debated the relative contributions of increasing wetter and warmer climate conditions and human landscape modifications to forest expansion, but generally lacked high resoltiuon proxies to measure these effects, or have relied on single proxies to reconstruct both climate and vegetation. Here, we develop and test a model of natural ecosystem distribution against vegetation histories, paleoclimate proxies, and the archaeological record to distinguish human from temperature and precipitation impacts on the distribution and expansion of Araucaria forests during the late Holocene.
