Objective: The quality of alcohol-related prevention and treatment in US primary care is poor. The purpose of this study was to describe the extent to which Electronic Health Records (EHRs) used by 167 primary care practices across 7 states currently include the necessary prompts, clinical support, and performance reporting essential for improving alcohol-related prevention and treatment in primary care.

Materials And Methods: Experts from five regional quality improvement programs identified basic EHR features needed to support evidence-based alcohol-related prevention (ie, screening and brief intervention) and treatment of alcohol use disorders (AUD).

Article Synopsis
  • Multi-cancer early detection tests (MCEDs) could revolutionize cancer screening by detecting over 50 types of cancer from a single blood sample, but public perception of these tests is not well-researched.
  • A qualitative study with 27 US participants revealed a mostly positive attitude towards MCEDs, with 85% showing interest and 88% finding the concept easy to grasp; however, concerns about accuracy, cost, and accessibility were prevalent.
  • The findings indicate that while there is enthusiasm for integrating MCEDs into primary care (93% support), the public emphasizes the need to address potential drawbacks before widespread adoption.

Domestication of dogs from their shared ancestors with wolves occurred more than 15,000 years ago and affected many characteristics of the species. We analyzed the blood RNA sequence data of 12 dogs and 11 wolves from Europe and Asia to shed more light on the domestication history of dogs. We implemented a differential gene expression analysis, a weighted gene correlation network analysis, gene ontology and genetic pathway analyses.

We present Einstein coefficient spectra and a detailed-balance derivation of generalized Einstein relations between them that is based on the connection between spontaneous and stimulated emission. If two broadened levels or bands overlap in energy, transitions between them need not be purely absorptive or emissive. Consequently, spontaneous emission can occur in both transition directions, and four Einstein coefficient spectra replace the three Einstein coefficients for a line.

Background: Addressing the critical public health crisis of substance use disorder (SUD), this study evaluates the accuracy of SUD treatment search tools, such as FindTreatment.gov, to connect patients with appropriate care.

Methods: To ensure geographic diversity, we randomly selected one state from four distinct US regions (Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio) and then randomly selected counties of varying sizes (one large, two medium, three small) within each state using a random number generator.

Article Synopsis
  • * The review evaluated interventions that could be implemented in primary care settings, focusing on randomized clinical trials involving children or their caregivers with no maltreatment history.
  • * Results from 25 trials indicated no significant differences in reports to Child Protective Services or child removal from homes after interventions, suggesting that current preventive strategies might not be effective in the short term.

Background: As the life expectancy of the cystic fibrosis (CF) population is lengthening with modulator therapies, diligent age-appropriate screening and preventive care are increasingly vital for long-term health and wellbeing.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis comparing rates of receiving age- and sex-appropriate preventive services by commercially insured adult people with CF (PwCF) and adults without CF from the general population (GP) via the Truven Health MarketScan database (2012-2018).

Results: We captured 25,369 adults with CF and 488,534 adults from the GP in the United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Alcohol use disorder affects over 28.3 million people in the U.S., significantly increasing health risks and mortality rates.
  • This study analyzed various therapies for alcohol use disorder, utilizing data from multiple sources and focusing on randomized clinical trials lasting at least 12 weeks.
  • Key findings indicated that acamprosate and oral naltrexone are effective, with specific numbers needed to treat suggesting a notable impact on reducing return to drinking behaviors compared to placebo.

Solution-processed semiconductors are in demand for present and next-generation optoelectronic technologies ranging from displays to quantum light sources because of their scalability and ease of integration into devices with diverse form factors. One of the central requirements for semiconductors used in these applications is a narrow photoluminescence (PL) line width. Narrow emission line widths are needed to ensure both color and single-photon purity, raising the question of what design rules are needed to obtain narrow emission from semiconductors made in solution.

Background: Telehealth has become widely used as a novel way to provide outpatient care during the COVID-19 pandemic, but data about telehealth use in primary care remain limited. Studies in other specialties raise concerns that telehealth may be widening existing health care disparities, requiring further scrutiny of trends in telehealth use.

Objective: Our study aims to further characterize sociodemographic differences in primary care via telehealth compared to in-person office visits before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and determine if these disparities changed throughout 2020.

When an organism is challenged with a pathogen a cascade of events unfolds. The innate immune system rapidly mounts a preliminary nonspecific defense, while the acquired immune system slowly develops microbe-killing specialists. These responses cause inflammation, and along with the pathogen cause direct and indirect tissue damage, which anti-inflammatory mediators seek to temper.

Unlabelled: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought widespread change to health care practice and research. With heightened stress in the general population, increased unhealthy alcohol use, and added pressures on primary care practices, comes the need to better understand how we can continue practice-based research and address public health priorities amid the ongoing pandemic. The current study considers barriers and facilitators to conducting such research, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, within the context of recruiting practices for the STop UNhealthy (STUN) Alcohol Use Now trial.

Despite recent educational advances, the need for a national standardized primary palliative care curriculum for health professions students remains evident. An interprofessional leadership team developed a set of core learning objectives built on previously published competencies. A survey was then sent to palliative care experts for feedback and consensus.
