Surgery is the standard treatment for stage I, II and certain stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). A proportion of patients with technically operable NSCLC do not undergo surgery because of significant co-morbidity or refusal, and radical radiotherapy may cure some of these patients. Between April 1997 and March 2000, 135 consecutive patients with stage I-IIIB NSCLC were treated with CT-planned accelerated hypofractionated radical radiotherapy to a dose of 50-55Gy in 15-20 fractions over 3-4 weeks at a single centre.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on how MMR-deficient cells (specifically Msh2(-/-) cells) respond to DNA damage, particularly in their cell-cycle regulation when exposed to cisplatin.
  • It was observed that these cells experience approximately 50% inhibition in entering mitosis, with a notable loss of an early G2 delay but a normal later G2 arrest, indicating a unique role of Msh2 in mitotic entry following DNA damage.
  • Overall, the results suggest that the absence of Msh2 leads to premature commitment to mitosis in some cells, which could contribute to genetic instability independent of late cell-cycle checkpoints.
