Multiphase flows involving granular materials are complex and prone to pattern formation caused by competing mechanical and hydrodynamic interactions. Here we study the interplay between granular bulldozing and the stabilising effect of viscous pressure gradients in the invading fluid. Injection of aqueous solutions into layers of dry, hydrophobic grains represent a viscously stable scenario where we observe a transition from growth of a single frictional finger to simultaneous growth of multiple fingers as viscous forces are increased.

By exploiting the reported relationship between ADHD and educational attainment (EA), we aimed to improve discovery of ADHD-associated genetic variants and to investigate genetic overlap between these phenotypes.
Method: A conditional/conjunctional false discovery rate (condFDR/conjFDR) method was applied to genome-wide association study (GWAS) data on ADHD (2,064 trios, 896 cases, and 2,455 controls) and EA (n=328,917) to identify ADHD-associated loci and loci overlapping between ADHD and EA.
Importance: Schizophrenia is associated with widespread cognitive impairments. Although cognitive deficits are one of the factors most strongly associated with functional outcome in schizophrenia, current treatment strategies largely fail to ameliorate these impairments. To develop more efficient treatment strategies in patients with schizophrenia, a better understanding of the pathogenesis of these cognitive deficits is needed.

Submerged granular material exhibits a wide range of behavior when the saturating fluid is slowly displaced by a gas phase. In confined systems, the moving interface between the invading gas and the fluid/grain mixture can cause beads to jam, and induce intermittency in the dynamics. Here, we study the stability of layers of saturated jammed beads around stuck air bubbles, and the deformation mechanism leading to air channel formations in these layers.

Purpose: A phase I study was conducted to investigate the safety, tolerability, and immunological responses to vaccination with a combination of telomerase-derived peptides GV1001 (hTERT: 611-626) and p540 (hTERT: 540-548) using granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) or tuberculin as adjuvant in patients with cutaneous melanoma.
Experimental Design: Ten patients with melanoma stages UICC IIb-IV were vaccinated 8 times intradermally with either 60 or 300 nmole of GV1001 and p540 peptide using GM-CSF as adjuvant. A second group of patients received only 300 nmole GV1001 in combination with tuberculin PPD23 injections.

We propose a modified version of the Tomlinson model for static friction between two chains of beads. We introduce disorder in terms of vacancies in the chain, and distribute the remaining beads in a scale invariant way. For this we utilize a generalized random Cantor set.
