Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia presenting with severe, refractory hypercalcaemia in an immunosuppressed renal transplant patient: Review of the literature and novel biochemical insights.

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a rare but serious complication of immunosuppression post-solid organ transplantation. We present a case of refractory, severe hypercalcaemia due to PJP in a renal transplant recipient. Treatment of PJP led to normalisation of the patient's calcium levels, and clinical improvement.

Symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the influenza virus, but because treatments and prognoses are different, it is important to accurately and rapidly differentiate these diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the analysis of complete blood count (CBC), including cellular population (CPD) data of leukocytes and automated flow cytometry analysis, could discriminate these pathologies. In total, 350 patients with COVID-19 and 102 patients with influenza were included between September 2021 and April 2022 in the tertiary hospital of Suresnes (France).

European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists/Advanced Breast Cancer Global Alliance quality indicators for metastatic breast cancer care.

Aims: Improvement in the care of patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) can only occur if the adequate quality of care is implemented and verified, including access to multidisciplinary, specialised care given in accordance with high-quality guidelines. To this purpose, European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists and the Advanced Breast Cancer Global Alliance joined efforts to develop the first set of quality indicators (QI) specifically for MBC that should be routinely measured and evaluated to ensure that breast cancer centres meet the required standards.

Methods: A working group of multidisciplinary European experts in breast cancer met to discuss each identified QI, reporting the definition, the minimum and target standard for breast cancer centres to achieve, and the motivation for selection.

Background And Aims: Beckman Coulter hematology analysers identify leukocytes by their volume (V), conductivity (C) and scatter (S) of a laser beam at different angles. Each leukocyte sub-population [neutrophils (NE), lymphocytes (LY), monocytes (MO)] is characterized by the mean (MN) and the standard deviation (SD) of 7 measurements called "cellular population data" (@CPD), corresponding to morphological analysis of the leukocytes. As severe forms of infections to SARS-CoV-2 are characterized by a functional activation of mononuclear cells, leading to a cytokine storm, we evaluated whether CPD variations are correlated to the inflammation state, oxygen requirement and lung damage and whether CPD analysis could be useful for a triage of patients with COVID-19 in the Emergency Department (ED) and could help to identify patients with a high risk of worsening.

Introduction: To ensure that all citizens have equal access to high-quality cancer diagnosis and care, the EU4Health Programme, Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, and Horizon Europe's Cancer Mission propose Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures in every European Union Member State. It is therefore important to establish the basic principles for high-performing cancer networks and a methodology for evaluating their quality and effectiveness. This article describes methods and standards/indicators for network evaluation found in literature, gives a comparative overview of the new OECI European Cancer Network Quality standards, and proposes principles for evaluating the performance of Comprehensive Cancer Networks as a basis for continuous improvement.

Most therapeutic advances in immunosuppression have occurred over the past few decades. Although modern strategies have been effective in reducing acute cellular rejection, excess immunosuppression comes at the price of toxicity, opportunistic infection, and malignancy. As our understanding of the immune system and allograft rejection becomes more nuanced, there is an opportunity to evolve immunosuppression protocols to optimize longer term outcomes while mitigating the deleterious effects of traditional protocols.

Using a collection of 45 fresh nasopharyngeal samples collected on universal transport media, we compare the Ct value obtained with 2 RT-PCR assays, the Alinity M SARS-CoV-2 and the Alinity M RESP-4-Plex (Abbott Molecular, Des Plaines, Illinois, Etats-Unis) processed on an Alinity M device. During the first wave of Covid-19 in France, in spring 2020, healthcare institution's laboratory had to adapt itself quickly to the growing demand for emergency biology, in particular by reorganizing their POCT analyzers: redeployment of analyzers and/or new installations. In order to analyze this management, a subgroup of 15 hospital biologists from the SFBC Working Group "Biochemical markers of Covid-19" sent, in fall 2020, an on-line survey to French hospital laboratories using POCT. Answers analysis (n = 86) shows a territorial disparity related to the severity of the first wave: increased activity essentially in red zones, management of unexpected situations, training of additional nursing staff for 40 % of the laboratories.
