Naloxone distribution to injecting drug users (IDUs) for peer administration is a suggested strategy to prevent fatal heroin overdose. The aim of this study was to explore attitudes of IDUs to administration of naloxone to others after heroin overdose, and preferences for method of administration. A sample of 99 IDUs (median age 35 years, 72% male) recruited from needle and syringe programs in Melbourne were administered a questionnaire.

We assessed the prevalence of iron deficiency and anemia and associated risk factors in a community-based sample of women living in a rural province of northwest Vietnam. A cross-sectional survey, comprised of written questionnaires and laboratory analysis of hemoglobin (Hb), ferritin, transferrin receptor, and stool hookworm egg count, was undertaken, and the soluble transferrin receptor/log ferritin index was calculated.

Objective: To describe a cohort of patients with Alzheimer's disease from a whole city population treated with donepezil, and to analyse outcomes over 4 years.
Methods: Historical cohort design: 88 patients recruited 1997-1998, assessed at baseline with 4-year follow-up, using an agreed protocol and validated measures: survival, retention in treatment, cognition, non-cognitive symptoms, weight change, carer stress.
Objectives: Capillary refill time (CRT) has been taught as a rapid indicator of circulatory status. The aim of this study was to define normal CRT in the Australian context and the environmental, patient, and drug factors that influence it.
Methods: This prospective observational study included healthy adults at hospital clinics, workplaces, universities, and community groups.
Linear measures of cerebral ventricular enlargement may act as surrogate measures of cerebral atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS). Linear atrophy markers were measured from routine MRI scans during a population survey of 171 Tasmanian MS patients and 91 healthy controls. Thirty-five Victorian MS clinic patients were recruited as a validation cohort with 14 of these re-assessed 4 years later.

Research Design And Methods: The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study followed-up 5,842 participants over 5 years. Normal glycemia, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and diabetes were defined using World Health Organization criteria.
Objective: To compare the various paediatric weight estimation methods (Advanced Pediatric Life Support, Broselow Tape, Argall, and Best Guess) and parental estimate to measured weight.
Patients And Method: A convenience sample of children aged 1-11 years who presented to the emergency department over a 6 month period were eligible for inclusion. Data collected included height, age, ethnicity, parent estimate of weight and measured weight.
Microalgae are sensitive indicators of environmental change and, as the basis of most freshwater and marine ecosystems, are widely used in the assessment of risk and development of environmental regulations for metals. However, interspecies differences in sensitivity to metals are not well understood. The relationship between metal-algal cell binding and copper sensitivity of marine microalgae was investigated using a series of 72-h growth-rate inhibition bioassays and short-term (1-h) uptake studies.

The relationship between milder elevations of blood glucose and mortality is less clear. This study investigated whether impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance, as well as diabetes mellitus, increase the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality.

The metal release and sequestration rates were affected to a much greater extent by changes in overlying water pH (5.5-8.

If such bioassays overestimate copper toxicity in surface waters, the relevance of water quality guidelines derived from these tests is questionable. In this study, the effect of acclimation to copper at environmentally relevant concentrations, on the sensitivity of the marine diatom Nitzschia closterium and the freshwater green alga Chlorella sp.

The study was conducted in Australia, where 557 adult participants with workplace e-mail and Internet access were randomly allocated to one of three weather forecast conditions: standard forecast (no UV), standard forecast + UV, standard forecast + UV + sun-protection messages. From late spring through summer and early autumn, they were e-mailed weekend weather forecasts late in the working week.

Objectives: To measure the magnitude of any sustained change in general practitioner beliefs and stated behavior about back pain 4.5 years after cessation of a media campaign designed to alter population back pain beliefs.
Objective: We examined the associations of television viewing time with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 2-h postchallenge plasma glucose (2-h PG) levels in Australian adults.
Research Design And Methods: A total of 8,357 adults aged > 35 years who were free from diagnosed diabetes and who attended a population-based cross-sectional study (Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study [AusDiab]) were evaluated. Measures of FPG and 2-h PG were obtained from an oral glucose tolerance test.
We used logistic regression to assess effectiveness of primaquine as Plasmodium vivax anti-relapse therapy using data extracted from studies of P. vivax relapses in Brazil, India, and Thailand. The risk of relapse in Thailand was 10 times that in India and twice that in Brazil.

Methods: Before-and-after study comparing 12-month periods before and after the process redesign for total episodes of ambulance bypass, waiting times (overall and by triage category) and total ED time (overall and by triage category). Time data were analysed using non-parametric methods.
Observational cohort studies are a powerful tool to assess the long-term outcome in chronic diseases. This study design has been utilized in local and regional outcome studies in multiple sclerosis (MS) and has yielded invaluable epidemiological information. The World Wide Web now provides an excellent opportunity for an international, collaborative cohort study of MS outcomes.

Background: The administration of antenatal corticosteroids to women at risk of preterm birth is an important component of care for such women. However, inevitably, attempts to maximise the number of women who receive corticosteroids ahead of preterm birth will also expose women perceived at risk who subsequently deliver at term. These women have not been previously quantified.

Design: A cross-sectional, population-based, computer-assisted telephone interview exploring sociodemographic factors and general and reproductive health.
Participants And Setting: Analysis of data from the Men in Australia Telephone Survey (MATeS) of 5990 Australian men aged 40 years and older interviewed between September and December 2003.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether beneficial effects on glycemic control of an initial laboratory-supervised resistance training program could be sustained through a community center-based maintenance program.
Research Design And Methods: We studied 57 overweight (BMI >or=27 kg/m2) sedentary men and women aged 40-80 years with established (>6 months) type 2 diabetes. Initially, all participants attended a twice-weekly 2-month supervised resistance training program conducted in the exercise laboratory.
A case-control study nested in the Health Watch cohort of petroleum industry workers, investigated whether the excess of lymphohematopoetic cancers, identified among male members of the Health Watch cohort, was associated with benzene exposure. Cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (n = 31), multiple myeloma (n = 15), and leukemia (n = 33) were identified between 1981 and 1999. Cases were age-matched to five controls.

An alternative treatment for hypertriglyceridaemia in non-HIV-infected populations is omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and placebo in lowering fasting triglyceride levels in HIV-infected patients on HAART.
