Introduction: After the introduction of compulsory pertussis vaccination in Poland in 1960, there was a sharp decline in the incidence of this disease. For several years, however, an increase in the number of reported cases has been observed. In 2015 and 2016, the incidence was 12.

Objective Of The Work: The aim of the study is to present the data of epidemiological surveillance of tetanus in 2017 in a historical perspective, taking into account the role of protective vaccination and a reference to activities for the elimination of neonatal tetanus on a global scale.
Introduction: In Poland, the high incidence of pertussis has been maintained for 10 years – in 2016 it was 17,77 per 100,000 population and it was 38% more compared to the previous year. The high percentage of pertussis is still present in those who are older, who may be a source of infection for non-immunized or not fully immunized newborns and infants. The most effective prevention strategy remains the implementation of vaccinations in accordance with the current calendar.

Material And Methods: The study is based on the individual forms of tetanus cases submitted to the NIZP-PZH Epidemiology Department and the data of the bulletin “Infectious Diseases and Poisoning in Poland in 2016.
Results: The number of tetanus cases in 2016 was 12, exactly as it was in the previous year 2015.
Introduction: In Poland, the high incidence of pertussis has been maintained for many years - the fiveyear median for 2005-2009 and 2010-2014 were 5.2 and 5.5 per 100,000 population.

Introduction: In Poland, they are still recorded high number of cases whooping cough - five-year median for 2005-2009 and 2010-2014 are similar and amount to 5.2 and 5.5 per 100 000 population.

Introduction: The epidemiological situation of pertussis in recent years has changed dramatically. There is a high percentage of cases of pertussis among adolescents and adults. Infected adults can be a source of infection for non-immune individuals such as infants.

Materials And Methods: We used the data published in the annual bulletin "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2011" and "Vaccinations in 2011" (NIPH-NIH-Department of Epidemiology, GIS - Department of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases in Humans - Warsaw 2012) and individual reports sent to the Department of Epidemiology NIPH-NIH RESULTS: In 2011 there were reported 14 cases of tetanus--(incidence 0.036/100 000) two less than in 2010.
Introduction: Results of the nationwide Pertussis Epidemiology Study implemented by Department of Epidemiology NIPH-NIH in 2009-2011 showed a high proportion of cases of whooping cough in adults whose only symptom of Bordetella pertussis infection was long lasting cough. It should be noted that the infected adults pose a risk of transmission of infection to susceptible contacts such as infants.
The Aim Of The Study: To assess the epidemiological situation of pertussis in Poland in 2011, including vaccine coverage of children.
Epidemiological assessment of the incidence of tetanus in Poland in 2010 was based on the analysis of aggregate data provided by the State Sanitary Inspection and published an annual newsletter: Infectious diseases and intoxications in Poland in 2010, compiled by MP Czarkowski, E Cielebak, B Kondej, E Staszewska, Warsaw in 2011 and based on an annual newsletter: Vaccinations in Poland in 2010, compiled by MP Czarkowski, E Cielebak, B Kondej, E Staszewska, Warsaw 2011. A more accurate characterization of disease was based on the individual reports sent to the Department of Epidemiology, NIPH-NIH. In the last decade the incidence of tetanus has remained below 0.

It is the infection of the re-emerging character and affects infants, youth and more frequently adults. The results of the Nationwide Surveillance Study of Pertussis conducted at the Department of Epidemiology (NIPH-NIH) in 2009-2011 confirmed the high incidence of pertussis in adults, among whom the only symptom of Bordetella pertussis infection was prolonged cough.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFRecurrence of pertussis in highly vaccinated populations has been observed in many countries. Two mechanisms have been proposed to explain it: a shift in incidence towards older age groups in which the protective effect of vaccination is diminished; and vaccine-induced changes in genomic and immunological characteristics of circulating strains of Bordetella pertussis, which become different from vaccine strains, thereby reducing vaccine efficacy. Marked increase in the incidence of pertussis has been observed in Poland since 1997, following a decade of stability at a low level.
