Total arterial revascularization in patients with acute myocardial infarction - feasibility and outcomes.

Background: In acute situations such as acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with indication for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), total arterial revascularization (TAR) is often rejected in favour of saphenous vein (SV) grafting, which is assumed to allow for quicker vessel harvesting, a simpler anastomosis technique, and thus quicker revascularization and fewer bleeding complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether reluctance to apply TAR in AMI is still justified from a technical point of view in the current era and whether superiority of TAR results is also evident in emergency patients with AMI undergoing CABG.

Methods: In this retrospective analysis of 434 consecutive patients undergoing CABG for AMI with either TAR or with a combination of one internal mammary artery and SV grafts between 2008 and 2014, procedural data, short-term and mid-term outcome were compared.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibit broad immune modulatory activity in vivo and can suppress T cell proliferation and dendritic cell activation in vitro. Currently, most MSC for clinical usage are derived from younger donors, due to ease of procurement and to the superior immune modulatory activity. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents about 13% of all lung cancers and is notoriously associated with paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS). Soil salinity is recognized worldwide as a major threat to agriculture, particularly in arid regions. Producers and decision-makers thus require updated and accurate maps of salinity in agronomical and environmentally relevant regions. The goals of this study were to test various regression models for estimating soil salt content based on hyperspectral data, HJ-CCD images, and Landsat OLI data using; develop optimal band Difference Index (DI), Ratio Index (RI), and Normalization Index (NDI) algorithms for monitoring soil salt content using image and spectral data; and to compare the performances of the proposed models using a Bootstrap-BP neural network model (Bootstrap-BPNN) from different data sources.

Comparing Patient-Centered Medical Home Implementation in Urban and Rural VHA Clinics: Results From the Patient Aligned Care Team Initiative.

Rural Veterans Health Administration (VHA) primary care clinics are smaller, have fewer staff, and serve more rural patients compared with urban VHA primary care clinics. This may lead to different challenges to implementation of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model, the Patient Aligned Care Team, in the VHAs' large integrated health system. In this cross-sectional observational study of 905 VHA primary clinics in the United States and Puerto Rico, we found overall PCMH implementation was greater in rural compared to urban primary care clinics.

Inflammatory proteins in nasal lavage of workers exposed to occupational agents.

Background: Low-molecular-weight (LMW) and high-molecular-weight (HMW) agents have been recognized as causes of occupational rhinitis (OR). Immunological mechanisms underlying OR differ according to the type of exposure. While HMW agents act mainly through IgE-mediated mechanisms, LMW agents appear to act through both immunological and non-immunological mechanisms.

Chronic bacterial infections associated with biofilm formation are often difficult to resolve without extended courses of antibiotic therapy. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) exert antibacterial activity in vitro and in acute bacterial infection models, but their activity in chronic infection with biofilm models has not been previously investigated. Therefore, we studied the effects of MSC administration in mouse and dog models of chronic infections associated with biofilms.

Differentiating human versus non-human bone by exploring the nutrient foramen: implications for forensic anthropology.

One of the roles of a forensic anthropologist is to assist medico-legal investigations in the identification of human skeletal remains. In some instances, only small fragments of bone may be present. In this study, a non-destructive novel technique is presented to distinguish between human and non-human long bones.

Congenital neurocristic cutaneous hamartoma with poliosis: A case report.

Neurocristic cutaneous hamartomas (NCH) are rare, pigmented skin lesions derived from the abnormal migration of neural crest cells. We report the case of a 57-year-old female with a congenital localized area of poliosis and underlying pigmented patch on her scalp. Analysis of 2 punch biopsies yielded features consistent with NCH.

Traumatic Brain Injury as a Trigger of Neurodegeneration.

Although millions of individuals suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) worldwide each year, it is only recently that TBI has been recognized as a major public health problem. Beyond the acute clinical manifestations, there is growing recognition that a single severe TBI (sTBI) or repeated mild TBIs (rTBI) can also induce insidious neurodegenerative processes, which may be associated with early dementia, in particular chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Identified at autopsy examination in individuals with histories of exposure to sTBI or rTBI, CTE is recognized as a complex pathology featuring both macroscopic and microscopic abnormalities.

Early heparin administration after traumatic brain injury: Prolonged cognitive recovery associated with reduced cerebral edema and neutrophil sequestration.

Background: Early administration of unfractionated heparin (UFH) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) reduces early in vivo circulating leukocytes (LEUs) in peri-injury penumbral brain tissue, enhancing cognitive recovery 2 days after injury. Altitude training has been shown to alter blood lactate (BL) levels due to alterations resulting from acclimatization. This study aims to estimate the impact of altitude training on BL changes immediately following an incremental treadmill test and during recovery before and after 10-day altitude training at approximately 1828 meters. Eight varsity cross-country runners performed an incremental treadmill test (ITT), pre and post-altitude training.

On January 9, 2014, crude MCHM, a mixture containing predominantly MCHM, was inadvertently released into the Elk River, a municipal water source that serves about 300,000 people in the Charleston, WV area, resulting in temporary contamination of 15 percent of the state's tap water and causing significant dermal exposure. The current studies were undertaken to determine whether crude MCHM or MCHM has the potential to produce dermal irritancy and/or sensitization.
