The primary approach to assessing monitored natural attenuation (MNA) is currently based on a conceptual model utilizing the total contaminant concentrations, assuming a single aqueous species. However, many contaminants, such as metals and radionuclide - including iodine, can exist in multiple species that behave chemically differently in the environment and can exist simultaneously. For example, radioiodine often occurs concurrently as three major aqueous species: iodide (I), iodate (IO), and organo-I, which undergo distinct attenuation pathways and exhibit markedly different mobility and geochemical behavior.

Impact of neighborhood disadvantage on cardiometabolic health and cognition in a community-dwelling cohort.

Introduction: Neighborhood disadvantage may be an important determinant of cardiometabolic health and cognitive aging. However, less is known about relationships among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Methods: The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage measured by national Area Deprivation Index (ADI) rank with measures of cardiometabolic health and cognition among Wake Forest (WF) Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) participants, with and without MCI.

Background: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) have been shown to reduce opioid prescribing for pain, but it is not well understood whether PDMPs influence utilization of medications for opioid use disorder. PDMP integration and mandatory use policies are two approaches implemented by states to increase use of PDMPs by prescribers. This study examined the effect of these approaches on distribution of methadone and buprenorphine from 2009 to 2021 for 50 states and DC.

Effects of States' Methods for Estimating Nonfatal Overdose, United States, 2021.

Objective: Previous nonfatal overdose is a key risk factor for drug overdose death; however, current nonfatal overdose surveillance is limited to people who receive medical attention. We identified states that tracked nonfatal overdoses treated in prehospital and hospital care settings, assessed the effects of different surveillance methods on the magnitude of nonfatal overdose estimates, and estimated states' nonfatal-to-fatal overdose ratio.

Methods: Two analysts independently reviewed state websites to characterize states' methods of capturing nonfatal overdose events from December 2022 through February 2023.

Background: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) have been widely adopted as a tool to address the prescription opioid epidemic in the United States. Ensuring carbon neutrality via algae-based wastewater treatment systems: Progress and future perspectives.

The emergence of algal biorefineries has garnered considerable attention to researchers owing to their potential to ensure carbon neutrality via mitigation of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Fate of pesticides in agricultural runoff treatment systems: Occurrence, impacts and technological progress.

The levels of pesticides in air, water, and soil are gradually increasing due to its inappropriate management. In particular, agricultural runoff inflicts the damages on the ecosystem and human health at massive scale. Present study summarizes 70 studies in which investigations on removal or treatment of pesticides/insecticides/herbicides are reported.

Allosteric site variants affect GTP hydrolysis on Ras.

RAS GTPases are proto-oncoproteins that regulate cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation in response to extracellular signals. The signaling functions of RAS, and other small GTPases, are dependent on their ability to cycle between GDP-bound and GTP-bound states. Structural analyses suggest that GTP hydrolysis catalyzed by HRAS can be regulated by an allosteric site located between helices 3, 4, and loop 7.

Allosteric Regulation of Switch-II Domain Controls KRAS Oncogenicity.

Changes in Inflammatory Markers in Patients Treated for Buruli Ulcer and Their Ability to Predict Paradoxical Reactions.

Mycobacterium ulcerans causes Buruli ulcer, the third most frequent mycobacterial disease after tuberculosis and leprosy. Transient clinical deteriorations, known as paradoxical reactions (PRs), occur in some patients during or after antibiotic treatment. We investigated the clinical and biological features of PRs in a prospective cohort of 41 patients with Buruli ulcer from Benin.

Integrating third-party apps with electronic health records to support COVID-19 response.

Objectives: To (1) track the integration of telehealth- and COVID-19-related apps with electronic health records (EHRs) over time, (2) identify the primary functionality of apps designed to support the COVID-19 response, and (3) examine whether apps available prior to the pandemic added new telehealth- or COVID-19-related functionalities during the pandemic.

Study Design: Data were collected from public EHR app galleries on a monthly basis from December 31, 2019, through June 1, 2021.

Methods: Apps were identified as relating to COVID-19 or telehealth using text analysis of the app marketing materials.

Disparities in patient portal access and the role of providers in encouraging access and use.

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify racial and ethnic disparities in patient portal offers, access, and use and to examine the role of providers in facilitating access to electronic health information (EHI) by offering patient portals and encouraging their use.

Materials And Methods: Using nationally representative survey data from 2019 and 2020 (N = 8028), we examined disparities in patients being offered access to a portal by their provider and differences in subsequent access and use. Using multivariable models, we estimated the effect of race and ethnicity on the likelihood of being offered, accessing or using a portal.

New EHR certification requirements and their association with duplicate tests and images.

Background: Certified electronic health record (EHR) technology has been adopted by most hospitals and health care providers. In 2015, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published new EHR certification requirements, known as the 2015 Edition. To date, no research has examined the impact of hospitals' adoption of the 2015 Edition on health care delivery.

Classification of KRAS-Activating Mutations and the Implications for Therapeutic Intervention.

Of the three RAS family members, KRAS is the most frequently mutated in human cancers. The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Drug Use Behaviors, Fentanyl Exposure, and Harm Reduction Service Support among People Who Use Drugs in Rural Settings.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the opioid overdose crisis in the US. Rural communities have been disproportionately affected by opioid use and people who use drugs in these settings may be acutely vulnerable to pandemic-related disruptions due to high rates of poverty, social isolation, and pervasive resource limitations.

Methods: We performed a mixed-methods study to assess the impact of the pandemic in a convenience sample of people who use drugs in rural Illinois.

Regulation of GTPase function by autophosphorylation.

A unifying feature of the RAS superfamily is a conserved GTPase cycle by which these proteins transition between active and inactive states. We demonstrate that autophosphorylation of some GTPases is an intrinsic regulatory mechanism that reduces nucleotide hydrolysis and enhances nucleotide exchange, altering the on/off switch that forms the basis for their signaling functions. Using X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, binding assays, and molecular dynamics on autophosphorylated mutants of H-RAS and K-RAS, we show that phosphoryl transfer from GTP requires dynamic movement of the switch II region and that autophosphorylation promotes nucleotide exchange by opening the active site and extracting the stabilizing Mg.

A combined field study of Buruli ulcer disease in southeast Benin proposing preventive strategies based on epidemiological, geographic, behavioural and environmental analyses.

Buruli ulcer is a neglected tropical disease caused by M. ulcerans, an environmental mycobacterium. This cutaneous infectious disease affects populations with poor access to sanitation, safe water and healthcare living in rural areas of West and Central Africa.

Molecular and epidemiological characterization of recurrent Mycobacterium ulcerans infections in Benin.

Background: Buruli ulcer is a neglected tropical disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, an environmental mycobacterium. Although transmission of M. ulcerans remains poorly understood, the main identified risk factor for acquiring Buruli ulcer is living in proximity of potentially contaminated water sources.

The ecosystem of apps and software integrated with certified health information technology.

Objective: This study: 1) characterized the app market by EHR app gallery and type of app; 2) tracked changes in the EHR app galleries from the end of 2019 through 2020; and 3) examined how apps connect to EHR data systems, and if the apps support the HL7 FHIR standard.

Materials And Methods: We developed a program that gathered data from the public app galleries hosted by Allscripts, athenahealth, Cerner Corporation, Epic Systems Corporation, and SMART. Data collection for this study began in December 2019 and ended December 2020.
