Article Synopsis
  • A phase II randomized controlled trial investigated the safety and potential benefits of intracarotid arterial administration (ICAA) of autologous CD34+ cells in patients recovering from acute ischemic stroke (IS) within 14 ± 7 days after the event.
  • Out of 28 patients, those in the cell-treated group showed significant improvement in angiogenesis and better overall recovery scores compared to a control group that received only standard medical therapy.
  • The treatment was found to be 100% safe without any long-term complications, suggesting that ICAA of CD34+ cells could be an effective option for enhancing recovery after IS.

It is a great honor to be invited to write a reflection of my lifelong bile acid research for the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the premier biochemistry journal in which I am proud to have published 24 manuscripts. I published 21 manuscripts in the Journal of Lipid Research, also a journal of American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I started my reflection from my early education in Taiwan, my coming to America for graduate study, my postdoctoral training in cytochrome P450 research, and my lifelong bile acid research career at the not so "visible" Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a highly destructive disease in human neurological functions. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) have tissue regenerations and anti-inflammations, especially with prion protein overexpression (PrPc ). Therefore, this study tested whether PrPc -ADMSCs therapy offered benefits in improving outcomes via regulating nod-like-receptor-protein-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome/DAMP signalling after acute SCI in rats.
