A number of widely grown varieties of Vitis vinifera ssp. sativa, the grape used for wine production, are known to have resulted from crosses between Pinot noir and Gouais blanc, although it is not known which was the maternal parent in these crosses. We have analysed microsatellites and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in chloroplast DNA from these two varieties and twelve progeny strains, including Chardonnay, Gamay noir and Aligoté.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "John W Haeger"

  • - John W Haeger's recent research primarily focuses on the genetic relationships and parental lineage of major wine grape varieties, particularly those derived from Vitis vinifera ssp. sativa.
  • - His 2010 study analyzes microsatellite data and chloroplast DNA SNPs to trace the maternal lineage of notable grape varieties, including Chardonnay and Gamay noir, which have origins linked to crosses between Pinot noir and Gouais blanc.
  • - The findings contribute valuable insights into viticulture and the history of grape breeding, aiding in understanding the genetic diversity and heritage of contemporary wine grapes.
