Gill microbiome structure and function in the chemosymbiotic coastal lucinid Stewartia floridana.

Lucinid bivalves harbor environmentally acquired, chemosynthetic, gammaproteobacterial gill endosymbionts. Lucinid gill microbiomes, which may contain other gammaproteobacterial and/or spirochete taxa, remain under-sampled. To understand inter-host variability of the lucinid gill microbiome, specifically in the bacterial communities, we analyzed the microbiome content of Stewartia floridana collected from Florida.

Calcaneocuboid distraction arthrodesis for children with symptomatic pes planovalgus: does fixation improve outcomes?

Lateral column lengthening is a common surgical procedure for addressing symptomatic pes planovalgus foot deformity. For more severe cases, the use of a calcaneocuboid distraction arthrodesis (CCDA) can allow for more powerful correction. Previous reports have cited an increased risk of graft collapse with loss of correction when this procedure is performed without supplemental hardware fixation.

Posterior femoral cutaneous neuropathy in piriformis syndrome: A vascular hypothesis.

Piriformis syndrome is described as a neuromuscular condition which occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed and/or irritated by the piriformis muscle. It is characterized by acute tenderness in the buttock with sciatica-like pain radiating into the posterior aspect of the thigh, leg, and foot. The neurogenic leg and foot pain experienced with this condition is consistent with involvement of the sciatic nerve.

Embryonic-only arsenic exposure alters skeletal muscle satellite cell function in killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus).

Arsenic is a contaminant found worldwide in drinking water and food. Epidemiological studies have correlated arsenic exposure with reduced weight gain and improper muscular development, while in vitro studies show that arsenic exposure impairs myogenic differentiation. The purpose of this study was to use Fundulus heteroclitus or killifish as a model organism to determine if embryonic-only arsenic exposure permanently reduces the number or function of muscle satellite cells.
