Multisyllabic decoding poses a significant challenge to upper elementary grade readers. The purposes of this study were to (a) examine the reliability and validity of a classroom assessment, the Multisyllabic Decoding Inventory (MDI); (b) describe fourth- and fifth-grade students' decoding of multisyllabic words in relation to their semantic difficulty (age of acquisition ratings); (c) investigate which aspects of word knowledge (word recognition and decoding skill, vocabulary knowledge, and morphological knowledge) predict real word and nonword reading for multisyllabic words; and (d) determine how student word knowledge and semantic difficulty of words jointly affect the odds of accurately recognizing a multisyllabic word. We found that (a) the MDI demonstrated acceptable internal consistency reliability and concurrent validity with standardized measures of word recognition and oral reading fluency; (b) students demonstrated strong performance in reading multisyllabic words and nonwords, but words with higher age of acquisition were less frequently recognized; (c) multisyllabic word reading was predicted by word recognition and decoding skill, vocabulary knowledge, and morphological knowledge, whereas multisyllabic nonword reading was predicted by decoding skills and morphological knowledge only; and (d) grade level, word recognition and decoding skill, and vocabulary at the student level increased the odds of recognizing a multisyllabic word correctly, whereas a word's age of acquisition rating decreased the odds of recognizing a multisyllabic word correctly.

Methods: Low voltage scanning electron microscopy was used to observe punch area coverage and morphology of adhered powder on a flat punch used for a limited number of compactions.
Results: Material accumulation in terms of area coverage of the punch per compaction cycle was determined at two pressures over five compactions.
Amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) consisting of acetaminophen (APAP) and copovidone were systematically studied to identify effects of drug loading and moisture content on mechanical properties, thermal properties, and tableting behavior. ASDs containing APAP at different levels were prepared by film casting and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and nanoindentation. The glass transition temperature (T) continuously decreased with increasing amount of APAP, but the hardness of ASDs was increased at a low APAP content and reduced at high APAP content.

This study first sought to correlate the granular Bond number, defined as the ratio of the inter-particle cohesion force to particle weight, to the flow function coefficient, a metric commonly used to assess powder flowability. In this study, we used small inhibitory RNA (siRNA) technology to reduce the levels of obscurin in primary cultures of skeletal myotubes to study its role in myofibrillogenesis and the organization of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). siRNA-treated myotubes showed a specific and dramatic reduction in the approximately 800 kDa form of obscurin by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, immunoblotting, and immunofluorescence.

Objective: We examined the sarcolemma of skeletal muscle from patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD1A) to learn if, as in other murine and human muscular dystrophies, its organization and relationship to nearby contractile structures are altered.
Methods: Unfixed biopsies of control and FSHD deltoid and biceps muscles, snap-frozen at resting length, were cryosectioned, indirectly immunolabeled with fluorescent antibodies to sarcolemmal and myofibrillar markers, and examined with confocal microscopy to localize the immunolabeled proteins. Glutaraldehyde-fixed samples were stained with heavy metals, embedded, thin-sectioned, and examined with electron microscopy to determine the relationship between the sarcolemma and the underlying myofibrils.
Evidence has been presented suggesting that a reactive metabolite, 2-phenylpropenal (ATPAL), may be responsible for the toxicities observed during therapy with the antiepileptic drug felbamate (FBM). Formation of ATPAL from its unstable immediate precursor, 3-carbamoyl-2-phenylpropionaldedhyde (CBMA) requires the loss of the hydrogen atom at position 2 in the propane chain, and it has been postulated that substitution of this atom with fluorine would prevent the formation of ATPAL. On the basis of this hypothesis, 2-fluoro-2-phenyl-1,3-propanediol dicarbamate (F-FBM) was synthesized and is presently undergoing drug development.
