We describe the case of a 72-year-old patient admitted to intensive care following abdominal surgery. Venous oxygen saturations from the right atrium and superior vena cava (SVC) showed large variation due to ongoing ischemia in the mesentric circulation. If trends in venous oxygen saturation are to be followed, serial samples must be taken from the same central venous catheter (CVC) port.

Both measurements show similar depressed freezing and melting points due to the Gibb-Thomson effect.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Diverticular disease is more apparent in the younger population under 50 years however, its management remains controversial. We report a preliminary quality of life (QoL) assessment which may be useful when determining the optimal management strategy.
Methods: A retrospective review of clinical records was carried out from April 1999 to 2004, to identify all patients diagnosed with diverticular disease and its complications, confirmed either by radiology and/or histology evidence.
The Gibbs-Thomson effect modifies the pressure and temperature at which clathrates occur, hence altering the depth at which they occur in the seabed. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements as a function of temperature are being conducted for water/ice/hydrate systems in a range of pore geometries, including templated SBA-15 silicas, controlled pore glasses and sol-gel silicas. Rotator-phase plastic ice is shown to be present in confined geometry, and bulk tetrahydrofuran hydrate is also shown to probably have a rotator phase.
