We reviewed the use of advanced display technologies for monitoring in anesthesia. Researchers are investigating displays that integrate information and that, in some cases, also deliver the results continuously to the anesthesiologist. Integrated visual displays reveal higher-order properties of patient state and speed in responding to events, but their benefits under an intensely timeshared load is unknown.

A method is described for quantitative analysis of monoterpenes in western redcedar (Thuja plicata) foliage by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Response factors for monoterpenes identified in redcedar are evaluated to determine similarities among monoterpene responses. Evaluation demonstrates that redcedar monoterpenes yield detector responses that fall into two groups.

This study provides evidence in the pig that stress experienced during gestation has long-lasting effects on offspring daughters, including their maternal behaviour. Thirty-six primiparous sows were divided into control and two groups that were stressed (by social mixing) during either the second (Mix 2) or third (Mix 3) trimester of pregnancy. We found detrimental effects of mixing on the mothers' growth, body lesions, and cortisol secretion, but did not observe any significant effects on reproductive parameters including birth weight.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to compare the reaction of acrylonitrile with Si(001) and C(001) (diamond) surfaces. Our results show that reaction with Si(001) and C(001) yield very different product distributions that result from fundamental differences in the ionic character of these surfaces. While acrylonitrile reacts with the C(001) surface via a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction in a manner similar to nonpolar molecules such as alkenes and disilenes, reaction with the Si(001) surface occurs largely through the nitrile group.

Pycnidial fungi belonging to the genus Ampelomyces are the most common natural antagonists of powdery mildews worldwide. During a study of the interactions between apple powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) and Ampelomyces mycoparasites, 52 new Ampelomyces isolates were obtained from P. leucotricha and, in addition, 13 new isolates from other species of the Erysiphaceae in four European countries.

Zyvoxtrade mark was the first oxazolidinone to be approved for clinical use against infections caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-positive bacteria. In experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), intravenous transfer of activated CD4(+) myelin-specific T cells is sufficient to induce disease. Transferred T cells access the CNS parenchyma by trafficking across the blood brain barrier (BBB) vascular endothelium into the perivascular space, and then across the glial limitans that is made up of astrocytes and microglia. Flow cytometry analysis of cells isolated from CNS tissue does not distinguish between T cell populations at the various stages of migration.

To determine whether intrinsic mechanisms drive supraoptic nucleus oxytocin neuron excitation during morphine withdrawal, we calculated the probability of action potential (spike) firing with time after each spike for oxytocin neurons in morphine-naive and morphine-dependent rats in vivo and measured changes in intrinsic membrane properties in vitro. The opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone, increased oxytocin neuron post-spike excitability in morphine-dependent rats; this increase was greater for short interspike intervals (<0.1 s).

We sought to explain decreased ACTH secretory responses to stress in pregnant rats by investigating hypothalamic CRH and vasopressin secretion and actions on anterior pituitary corticotrophs. In late pregnancy median eminence, CRH content was reduced (by 12%). Anterior pituitary proopiomelanocortin mRNA expression, measured by in situ hybridization but not radioimmunoassayed ACTH content, was also reduced (by 45% on d 21); CRH receptor (CRHR)1 mRNA expression was unaltered in pregnancy, but V1b receptor mRNA expression was reduced (by 19%).

Introduction: Previous studies have reported ethnic differences in the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the reasons for these differences remain unclear.

Hypothesis: Ethnic differences in the prevalence of PTSD may reflect ethnic differences in (1) exposure to traumatic events; (2) appraisal of such event as traumatic; and (3) culturally-determined responses to standardized diagnostic instruments, reflecting differences in cultural meanings associated with physical symptoms and idioms of distress.

Methods: Ethnic differences in risk factors and factor structures of PTSD symptoms were examined in 188 Alaskan Natives and 371 Euro-Americans exposed to the Exxon-Valdez oil spill in 1989.

We have investigated the frequency-dependent interfacial electrical properties of nanocrystalline diamond films that were covalently linked to DNA oligonucleotides and how these properties are changed upon exposure to complementary and noncomplementary DNA oligonucleotides. Frequency-dependent electrical measurements at the open-circuit potential show significant changes in impedance at frequencies of >10(4) Hz when DNA-modified diamond films are exposed to complementary DNA, with only minimal changes when exposed to noncomplementary DNA molecules. Measurements as a function of potential show that at 10(5) Hz, the impedance is dominated by the space-charge region of the diamond film.

Flow cytometry has been validated as an objective method of demonstrating and quantifying micrometastases. Micrometastases within bone marrow indicate a poor prognosis in patients with upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and breast epithelial tumours. We prospectively sought to assess the feasibility of testing rib marrow for bone marrow micrometastases in head and neck cancer and to report their frequency in a cohort of patients.

To identify genes involved in the transformation of thyroid follicular cells, we explored, using DNA oligonucleotide microarrays, the transcriptional response of PC Cl3 rat thyroid epithelial cells to the ectopic expression of the RET/PTC oncogenes. We found that RET/PTC was able to induce the expression of CXCR4, the receptor for the chemokine CXCL12/SDF-1alpha/beta. We observed that CXCR4 expression correlated with the transforming ability of the oncoprotein and depended on the integrity of the RET/PTC-RAS/ERK signaling pathway.

VCAM-1 is an adhesion molecule that is important to leukocyte movement across the blood-brain barrier and is involved in the formation of destructive CNS inflammatory lesions in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and multiple sclerosis (MS). We examined VCAM-1 expression in the CNS of animals with passively induced EAE and found abundant expression not only on the CNS endothelium but also on astrocytes. We show that tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 (TNFR1) signaling is required for VCAM-1 expression by astrocytes, not the vascular endothelium.

RET/PTC3 (RP3) is an oncogenic fusion protein which is frequently expressed in papillary thyroid carcinomas and has been detected in thyroid tissue from patients diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The constitutive activation of the tyrosine kinase domain in the carboxyl-terminal end of RP3 induces signaling pathways within thyrocytes and causes cellular transformation. One of the signaling pathways activated in RP3-expressing cells involves the activity of the transcription factor NF-kappaB and the production of downstream targets including GM-CSF and macrophage chemotactic protein 1.
