Variables associated with level of disability in working individuals with nonacute low back pain: a cross-sectional investigation.

Study Design: Single-site, exploratory, cross-sectional design.

Objective: To identify variables associated with disability related to low back pain (LBP), as measured by the modified Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (mOSW), in a sample of working adults with nonacute LBP.

Background: Compared to acute LBP, there is little information available in the literature to identify variables associated with LBP-related disability in working individuals with stage 2 and stage 3 LBP.

A novel case of transient right ventricular failure in a patient with respiratory distress.

Right ventricular (RV) failure is characterized by an inability to pump blood into the pulmonary circulation and can often lead to hemodynamic instability. Common causes of RV failure include left ventricular (LV) failure, RV infarction, sepsis, cor pulmonale due to acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary emboli, or pulmonary hypertension. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman with no significant pulmonary or cardiac disease who presented with hypoxic respiratory failure in the setting of opioid overdose.

Comparison of ballistic and static stretching on hamstring muscle length using an equal stretching dose.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine which stretching technique, static or ballistic, is most effective for increasing hamstring muscle length when delivered at the same stretching dose over a 4-week training program. A single-blind, randomized controlled trial design was used in this investigation. Thirty-two participants (16 women and 16 men) between the ages of 18 and 27 years participated in the study.

The relationship of body segment length and vertical jump displacement in recreational athletes.

The purpose of this study was to determine if segmental skeletal length contributes to vertical jump (VJ) displacement in recreational athletes. Skeletal length measurements of the trunk, femur, tibia, and foot were obtained by palpation of bony landmarks and a standard tape measure. A pilot study (n = 10) examined the intratester and intertester reliability for each skeletal measure.

Effect of Iyengar yoga therapy for chronic low back pain.

Low back pain is a significant public health problem and one of the most commonly reported reasons for the use of Complementary Alternative Medicine. A randomized control trial was conducted in subjects with non-specific chronic low back pain comparing Iyengar yoga therapy to an educational control group. Both programs were 16 weeks long.

Successful treatment of calciphylaxis with intravenous sodium thiosulfate.

Calciphylaxis is a dreaded complication of renal failure characterized by nodular subcutaneous calcification and painful tissue necrosis often leading to ulceration, secondary infection, and high mortality rates. The case of a woman receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis who had a typical clinical presentation of calciphylaxis confirmed by x-ray and technetium scan findings is described. After nonresponse to conventional therapy, treatment with intravenous sodium thiosulfate 3 times weekly was begun, and she had rapid and dramatic relief of signs and symptoms and improvement of technetium scans.

Critical evaluation of radiolabeled lymphocytes to detect acute renal transplant rejection in a large animal model.

Background: Renal transplant rejection cannot be diagnosed with certainty by non-invasive techniques. These techniques lack the specificity to differentiate rejection from other causes of renal dysfunction such as ATN and calcineuria toxicity. Since rejection involves lymphocytes, which the other courses of dysfunction do not, radiolabeling lymphocytes is an attractive technique to diagnose rejection non-invasively.
