Purpose: Shoulder stiffness is a common complication following rotator cuff repair (RCR) surgery. However, there is a paucity of literature on the short-term effects of postoperative stiffness on outcomes following RCR. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of postoperative shoulder stiffness on short-term outcomes following RCR.

Imaging small dynamic lesions using positron emission tomography and computed tomography: an F-sodium fluoride valvular phantom study.

Aims: F-sodium fluoride (F-NaF) positron emission tomography (PET) detects active microcalcification and predicts adverse outcomes including bioprosthetic valve deterioration. However, measuring small areas of F-NaF uptake within moving structures remains challenging, requiring further optimization. We developed a representative cardiac phantom to optimize F-NaF imaging of bioprosthetic valves.

Introduction: The smoking pattern of Latino smokers differs from non-Latino white smokers such that physical dependence may not be a strong motivator for smoking among Latinos. Multidimensional measures of dependence may be more useful, but there is a lack of psychometrically sound multidimensional Spanish-language measures. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a Spanish-language adaptation of the Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Dependence Motives (Brief WISDM) for use among Spanish-speaking Latino smokers in the U.

The Unusual Mesophases and Properties Exhibited by a Family of Glycosteroids.

In this article we describe research on the synthesis and characterization of a family of "Janus" amphiphiles composed of disaccharide head groups and alkaloid units joined together via a methylene linker, and bearing a lateral aliphatic chain of varying length. The condensed phases formed by self-organization of the products as a function of temperature were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, thermal polarized light microscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering, allied with computational modelling and simulations. Structural studies on heating specimens from the solid showed that some homologues exhibited lamellar, columnar and bicontinuous mesophases, whereas the same homologues revealed different phase sequences on cooling from the amorphous liquid.

The Association of TSLP and IL-4 with Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps.

Background: Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) plays an important role in mediating the type-2-inflammatory response. This study examined how TSLP and interleukin (IL)-4 levels in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) correlated with clinical and postoperative outcomes.

Methods: Solid-phase sandwich ELISA was used to analyze TSLP and IL-4 levels in mucus (n = 47), plasma (n = 17), polyp (n = 30), inferior (n = 25), and middle (n = 26) turbinate tissue collected during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in CRSwNP patients (n = 76) and controls (n = 11).

This article provides a historical review and a current perspective on the procedures used to palliate cyanosis in ductal-dependent infants. The Blalock-Taussig-Thomas (BTT) shunt is the historical predecessor of both the contemporary-modified BTT shunt and interventional stenting of the Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).

It takes a village to raise a child- A multidisciplinary approach to promoting paediatric health literacy in cystic fibrosis.

Background: In Northern Ireland, approximately 550 people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) attend the regional paediatric and adult centres within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This autosomal recessive chronic condition necessitates regular clinical monitoring and a high treatment burden, as well as time implications for the maintenance of respiratory devices. Development of health literacy skills at an early age and promoting children with CF (CwCF) to take an active role in their healthcare has many advantages relating to their long-term self-care in preparation for transition from paediatric to adult care, decision-making and partnership engagement with the CF-multidisciplinary team (CF-MDT).

Background: There is a paucity of literature evaluating the utilization of short-stay total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) in different racial groups. The purpose of this study is to compare short-stay TSA utilization and postoperative outcomes across racial groups.

Methods: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was queried from 2010 to 2018 to identify patients who underwent primary short-stay TSA, defined as a length of stay of less than 2 midnights.

Background: Frailty is an age-related state of multisystem decline that has been associated with negative outcomes after surgery. Numerous methods have been utilized to quantify frailty and predict postoperative outcomes with variable results. The purpose of this study is to determine if the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) is an independent predictor of postoperative complications and increased healthcare costs following elective primary total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA).

Improving health literacy and stakeholder-directed knowledge of One Health through analysis of readability: a cross sectional infodemiology study.

Background: The One Health approach involves collaboration across several sectors, including public health, veterinary and environmental sectors in an integrated manner. These sectors may be disparate and unrelated, however to succeed, all stakeholders need to understand what the other stakeholders are communicating. Likewise, it is important that there is public acceptance and support of One Health approaches, which requires effective communication between professional and institutional organisations and the public.

Digital behavior change interventions (DBCIs) hold promise as a more generalizable and scalable approach to overcome the resource and time limitations that traditional behavioral intervention programs face, especially within an occupational setting.

Background: Prehabilitation is safe, feasible and may improve a range of outcomes in patients with oesophago-gastric cancer (OGC). Recent studies have suggested the potential of prehabilitation to improve body composition, sarcopenia and physical fitness, reduce surgical complications and improve quality of life. Despite this, prehabilitation services are not offered throughout all OGC centres in the UK.

Purpose: Increased prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) highlights a desire for screening with liver ultrasound normalized local variance (NLV). We aimed to assess variations in NLV values measured at different sampling depths and discuss common technical considerations in measuring liver NLV.

Methods: We retrospectively measured liver NLVs at variable depths on ultrasound images pre-recorded in 116 participants who underwent liver magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) and ultrasound to screen for MASLD.

Background: People with cystic fibrosis (CF) may develop clinically significant chronic respiratory infections with (PA) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Open water has been suggested to be an important source for continuous or intermittent exposure to these pathogens. To date, there has been a paucity of studies examining the relationship between chronic PA and NTM infection in CF patients and surfaces waters, including blue spaces.
