Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) are reported to have an increased risk of developing severe infections, leading to hospitalizations with sepsis. However, data regarding the impact of comorbid NAFLD on in-hospital outcomes of patients with sepsis is scarce. This nationwide retrospective observational study using discharge data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality included 21,057,911 adult patients who were admitted to hospitals in the United States between 2000 and 2019 with a primary discharge diagnosis of sepsis.

Long-term alcohol abuse can cause alcohol-related liver injury (acute alcoholic hepatitis, acute liver failure, hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, or cirrhosis), as well as cardiac injury. The Allurion Elipse™ device is a swallowable balloon in the form of a capsule placed without endoscopy that serves the same purpose as an intragastric balloon (IGB) used for weight loss. We report a case of a 43-year-old female who presented with a complete gastric outlet obstruction confirmed by computed tomography (CT) scan. The patient initially failed conservative management; therefore, the IGB was later removed endoscopically.

Choriocarcinoma syndrome is a rare phenomenon that occurs in male patients with testicular choriocarcinoma. Male patients who have a testicular non-seminomatous germ cell tumor (TNSGCT) with at least partial choriocarcinoma histology, and metastases to the lungs and/or other extragonadal sites, as well as a markedly elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), have been prone to pulmonary bleeding, hypoxia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The respiratory complications occur immediately after chemotherapy is administered or, in some cases, spontaneously.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic can result in severe or fatal disease in a subset of infected patients. While the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19 disease has yet to be fully elucidated, an overexuberant and harmful immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be a pivotal aspect of critical illness in this patient population. The inflammatory cytokine, IL-6, has been found to be consistently elevated in severely ill COVID-19 patients, prompting speculation that IL-6 is an important driver of the pathologic process.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is currently causing a global pandemic, is found to be associated with abnormal coagulation parameters and hyper-coagulable state with increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Here, we present two non-ICU cases of COVID-19, complicated with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). As of now, there are no proper guidelines established on anticoagulation in these patients.
