Retrospective evaluation of Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity (G-ROP) and Colorado Retinopathy of Prematurity (CO-ROP) screening algorithms in University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers cohort.

Of the 70,000 infants screened for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) each year in the United States, only 43% develop any ROP, and <10% develop treatment-requiring ROP. Investigators have tried to develop new methods for determining more specific screening criteria, including the Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity (G-ROP) and Colorado Retinopathy of Prematurity (CO-ROP), to reduce the number of infants being screened while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity. We evaluated the records of 138 premature infants who received treatment for ROP between 2010 and 2021 with respect to G-ROP (129 infants) and CO-ROP (102 infants) to test the sensitivity of each.

Effect of synbiotics on weight loss and metabolic health in adults with overweight and obesity: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effect of synbiotics on body composition and metabolic health in individuals with excessive body weight.

Methods: The 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial had individuals aged 30 to 60 years with BMI of 25 to 34.9 kg/m .

How Jupiter's unusual magnetospheric topology structures its aurora.

Jupiter's bright persistent polar aurora and Earth's dark polar region indicate that the planets' magnetospheric topologies are very different. High-resolution global simulations show that the reconnection rate at the interface between the interplanetary and jovian magnetic fields is too slow to generate a magnetically open, Earth-like polar cap on the time scale of planetary rotation, resulting in only a small crescent-shaped region of magnetic flux interconnected with the interplanetary magnetic field. Most of the jovian polar cap is threaded by helical magnetic flux that closes within the planetary interior, extends into the outer magnetosphere, and piles up near its dawnside flank where fast differential plasma rotation pulls the field lines sunward.

Space weather. Ionospheric control of magnetotail reconnection.

Observed distributions of high-speed plasma flows at distances of 10 to 30 Earth radii (R(E)) in Earth's magnetotail neutral sheet are highly skewed toward the premidnight sector. The flows are a product of the magnetic reconnection process that converts magnetic energy stored in the magnetotail into plasma kinetic and thermal energy. We show, using global numerical simulations, that the electrodynamic interaction between Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere produces an asymmetry consistent with observed distributions in nightside reconnection and plasmasheet flows and in accompanying ionospheric convection.

Contextual cuing: the effects of stimulus variation, intentionality, and aging.

Three experiments investigated the generalisation of contextual cuing and whether the effect is incidental or intentional in nature. Experiment 1 assessed contextual cuing across variations in display contrast, homogeneity, and spatial separation. Cuing effects were found with all display types and reaction-time disruption was manifested for repeated displays when consistent configurations had their target locations altered.

Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to identify safety and efficiency-related design features for inclusion in operating room (OR) construction documents.

Background: Organizations are confronted with an array of challenges when planning an OR, including inefficiencies in operations, adverse events, and a variety of innovations to choose from. Currently, techniques that can be used in design practice and to inform design decision making for implementable OR solutions are limited.

The effects of driving experience on responses to a static hazard perception test.

Novice drivers exhibit deficits in hazard perception that are likely to increase their risk of collisions. We developed a static hazard perception test that presents still images to observers and requires them to indicate the presence of a traffic conflict that would lead to a collision. Responses to these scenes were obtained for young adult novice (N=29) and experienced drivers (N=27).

Measurement of water colour using AVIRIS imagery to assess the potential for an operational monitoring capability in the Pamlico Sound Estuary, USA.

The monitoring of water colour parameters can provide an important diagnostic tool for the assessment of aquatic ecosystem condition. Remote sensing has long been used to effectively monitor chlorophyll concentrations in open ocean systems; however, operational monitoring in coastal and estuarine areas has been limited because of the inherent complexities of coastal systems, and the coarse spectral and spatial resolutions of available satellite systems. Data were collected using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Advanced Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) flown at an altitude of approximately 20000 m to provide hyperspectral imagery and simulate both MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data.

Peer Review as a QA Tool in Environmental Applications.

Peer Review is commonly applied during the final stage of a project and is used in the science community to determine the soundness of a conclusion and if the quality of information meets the standards of the scientific and technical community. Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures are most effective when applied to planning, then during the process stage of a project, and during the review of a product. The gold standard for validating the quality of a study's results is comparison with a referenced data set, model, or result (Azouzi, 1999).

Implementing and auditing electronic recordkeeping systems used in scientific research and development.

Electronic recordkeeping is increasingly replacing handwritten records in the course of "normal business." As this trend continues, it is important that organizations develop and implement electronic recordkeeping policies and procedures. This is especially true for research and development organizations because of the potential to transform a discovery into a patent, and at times patent application contests are resolved in litigation.
