Overcoming developing world challenges of cochlear implantation: Chinese perspective.

Purpose Of Review: Over a short period, China has adopted cochlear implants and emerged as a burgeoning market. This represents a valuable case study for emerging countries in terms of planning, initiating, and growing cochlear implant programs.

Recent Findings: Although many challenges such as funding, establishing infrastructure, and recipient community support have been addressed, many more remain.

Pediatric Auditory Brainstem Implantation: Impact on Audiological Rehabilitation and Tonal Language Development.

Objective: This is a retrospective review of the impact of an Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) on the audiological rehabilitation and tonal language development of pediatric patients with prelingual profound deafness in Hong Kong.

Results: From January 2009 to February 2015, 11 pediatric patients with profound prelingual deafness received an ABI in Hong Kong (age range 1.67-3.

Improving Mobile Phone Speech Recognition by Personalized Amplification: Application in People with Normal Hearing and Mild-to-Moderate Hearing Loss.

Purpose: In this study, the authors evaluated the effect of personalized amplification on mobile phone speech recognition in people with and without hearing loss.

Methods: This prospective study used double-blind, within-subjects, repeated measures, controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of applying personalized amplification based on the hearing level captured on the mobile device. The personalized amplification settings were created using modified one-third gain targets.

Auditory Brainstem Implantation in Chinese Patients With Neurofibromatosis Type II: The Hong Kong Experience.

Objective: To describe our experience and outcomes of auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) in Chinese patients with Neurofibromatosis Type II (NF2).

Study Design: Retrospective case review.

Retropharyngeal abscess in a young child due to ingestion of eel vertebrae.

Foreign body ingestion was immediately suspected at the emergency department when a 14-month-old boy presented with fever, refusal to eat, and history of choking after consumption of congee with minced fish meat the day before. Two eel vertebrae were subsequently retrieved from the piriform fossa. This case is reported to discuss the importance of obtaining the relevant history of foreign body ingestion and high index of suspicion in very young children.

[Treatment of moderately severe hearing loss with totally implantable hearing aid].

Objective: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of totally implantable hearing aid (Carina) was assessed in adult patients with bilateral moderate to severe hearing loss.

Methods: Surgical implantations of Carina were performed in three adult patients with bilateral moderate to severe hearing loss. The safety and effectiveness were evaluated in a more than 12 months follow-up by comparison of outcomes of PTA and speech audiometry pre and post-operatively.

The combined olfactory test in a Chinese population.

Objective: To establish an olfactory test in the Hong Kong Chinese population.

Study Design: Prospective analysis of the results of a combined olfactory test (COT) for patients with olfactory dysfunction and for normal subjects attending a secondary and tertiary ear, nose and throat centre.

Method: Our COT was based on and modified from the Connecticut Chemosensory Research Centre test.
