Overt Scientific Bias and Clandestine Acts by Trusted Scientists: The Flawed Application of the Linear No-threshold Model.

The Health Physics Society (HPS) released a video documentary on the history of the linear no-threshold (LNT) model in April 2022. It exposed many scientific and ethical failings of many leaders, influential scientists, and organizations that have resulted in the current system of radiological protection. Since then, the society received many comments; most were supportive, while a few criticized the video documentary as delivering an anti-LNT message.

Published in December 2014, National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements Report No. 175, Decision Making for Late-Phase Recovery from Major Nuclear or Radiological Incidents, emphasizes the importance of local, state, and national plans addressing late-phase issues and decision-making processes concurrently with emergency response requirements. The report includes eight recommendations ranging from a broad call for a national strategy promoting community resilience as a preferred approach for preparing to recover from nuclear or radiological incidents to more specific calls for research and strategies for cleanup and waste management.

It Is Time to Move Beyond the Linear No-Threshold Theory for Low-Dose Radiation Protection.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is the primary federal agency responsible for promulgating regulations and policies to protect people and the environment from ionizing radiation. Currently, the USEPA uses the linear no-threshold (LNT) model to estimate cancer risks and determine cleanup levels in radiologically contaminated environments. The LNT model implies that there is no safe dose of ionizing radiation; however, adverse effects from low dose, low-dose rate (LDDR) exposures are not detectable.
