In this paper, we investigated the previously synthesized anticonvulsant enaminone ethyl ester analogs using the computational gaussian 03 programs. The significant chemical features of the enaminone compounds that lead to positive anticonvulsant activity were identified. From our analyses, we believe that the neutrality of the phenyl ring may be important for binding in the hydrophobic pocket of the active site and that the binding of the phenyl substituent is the main reason why some analogs are active and others are inactive.

Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations are performed for S4. The effect of single- and multireference trial functions, as well as choice of orbitals, is investigated for its effect on the quality of the Monte Carlo estimates. Estimates of symmetric (two S2 molecules) and asymmetric (S atom and S3 molecule) bond dissociation are reported.

Ab initio electronic structure calculations are reported for S4. Geometric and energetic parameters are calculated using the singles and doubles coupled-cluster method, including a perturbutional correction for connected triple excitation, CCSD(T), together with systematic sequences of correlation consistent basis sets extrapolated to the complete basis set limit. The geometry for the ground state singlet C2v structure of S4 is in good agreement with the microwave structure determined for S4.
