Different Endocrine Effects of an Evening Dose of Amitriptyline, Escitalopram, and Placebo in Healthy Participants.

Objective: The primary aim of this study was to further characterize the acute effects of amitriptyline (AMI) and escitalopram (ESC) on serum levels of ghrelin, leptin, cortisol and prolactin in healthy humans.

Methods: Eleven healthy male participants received a single dose of AMI 75 mg, ESC 10 mg, or placebo (PLA) at 9:00 PM in a double blind, randomized, controlled, repeated measures study separated by one week. Fasting morning serum levels (7:00 AM) of ghrelin, leptin, cortisol and prolactin were assessed.

The purpose of this clinical report is to describe a new method for creating an emergence profile starting at the time of immediate implant placement. Clinical steps for creating the emergence profile are described from the time of implant placement to restoration.

Sleep restriction over several days does not affect long-term recall of declarative and procedural memories in adolescents.

Objectives: There is broad evidence that sleep as opposed to waking facilitates the consolidation of both declarative and procedural memory. The current study addressed the question whether different extents of sleep restriction after learning would impair long-term memory consolidation in adolescents.

Methods: Eighty-eight healthy adolescents were randomized to five different sleep protocols with 9, 8, 7, 6 or 5 h of time in bed for four consecutive nights under controlled conditions that excluded daytime sleep.

This paper gives an overview on current and new pharmacological treatments of insomnia. Additionally, some evidence based treatment options with regard to cognitive behavioral therapy are presented.

Induction of local protective immunity to Eimeria acervulina by a Lactobacillus-based probiotic.

Previously we have shown that resistance to Eimeria acervulina (EA) infection in broiler chickens was enhanced by a probiotic treatment. In the present studies, we examined cytokine and oocyst production under similar conditions using a commercial Lactobacillus-based probiotic. Day-old male broiler chicks were fed control or probiotic diets and were orally challenged with either 2x10(4) (Experiment 1) or 1x10(4) (Experiment 2) oocysts of EA at 3 weeks of age.

Intestinal immunomodulation by vitamin A deficiency and lactobacillus-based probiotic in Eimeria acervulina-infected broiler chickens.

In a 2 X 2 factorial study, a broiler starter ration was amended for vitamin A (control, C; deficient, A) and probiotic status (-, P) to investigate their modulatory effects onthe host immune system. Birds were inoculated orally with Eimeria acervulina (EA) oocysts, and disease susceptibility was evaluated by assessment of fecal oocyst shedding. Humoral and local cellular mediated immunity were assessed by evaluation of antibody and cytokine (interferon-gamma [IFN-gamma] and interleukin-2 [IL-2]) levels in sera and intestinal secretions on a 3-day interval after inoculation.

Simplified technique for retrieving cemented implant restorations.

The retrieval of cemented implant restorations can be a difficult problem for patients and clinicians. This article describes an accurate method of locating the implant abutment access chamber and abutment retaining screw so that the implant restoration can be retrieved without damage.

High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of biogenic amines in poultry carcasses.

Biogenic amines, produced by bacterial decarboxylation of amino acids, have been associated with toxicological symptoms in broilers fed various poultry byproducts. A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method is described for the quantitation of eight biogenic amines (tryptamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine, spermidine, and spermine) in chicken carcasses. Amines were extracted with perchloric acid, derivatized with dansyl chloride, separated using gradient elution (methanol and water), and detected by fluorescence.
