Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk prediction by combining the risk factors from 23 existing risk-assessment models (RAMs), as current models like Caprini and Padua have limited accuracy when used for all hospital admissions.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 1.1 million patients at Veterans Affairs facilities to assess the predictive power of a new composite RAM against the Caprini model.
  • The composite RAM, featuring 102 risk factors, showed a significant improvement in predicting VTE events, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.74 compared to the Caprini model's AUC of 0.63.

Objective: To calculate the incidence and identify the predictors of persistent postoperative opioid use at different postoperative days.

Background Data: A subset of surgical patients continues to use long-term opioids. The importance of the risk factors at different postoperative days is not known.

Background: Patients recovering from opioid use disorders (OUD) may be prone to relapse and opioid misuse in the postoperative period due to re-exposure to prescription opioids for pain control. This retrospective study analyzed the incidence of confirmed opioid misuse in the postoperative period in patients with OUDs enrolled in an opioid agonist treatment (OAT) program.

Methods: The study population was US veterans with a diagnosis of OUD who enrolled in the OAT program at VA Maryland Health Care System (Baltimore, Maryland, USA) between 1/1/2000 and 12/31/2016.

Aims: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is believed to be co-morbid with rheumatologic conditions such as Osteoarthritis (OA). We determine 30-day prevalence and cumulative incidence, and risk factors for facial pain in a cohort of subjects who either had or were at risk of developing symptomatic radiographic knee osteoarthritis (SRKOA).

Methods: Poisson regression models examined whether age, sex, race, Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) score, number of painful joints, and presence of SRKOA were risk factors for facial pain in 4,423 subjects at baseline and in 3,472 subjects at 24 and/or 48 months follow-up.

Purpose: To assess the impact of a voluntary withdrawal of over-the-counter cough and cold medications (OTC CCMs) labeled for children under age 2 years on pediatric ingestions reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

Methods: Trend analysis of OTC CCMs ingestions in children under the age 6 years resulting from therapeutic errors or unintentional poisonings for 27 months before (pre-) and 15 months after (post-) the October 2007 voluntary withdrawal was conducted. The rates and outcome severity were examined.
