Data on outcomes of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are limited in patients with pulmonary atresia intact ventricular septum (PAIVS). The objective of this study was to describe the use of ECMO and the associated outcomes in patients with PAIVS. We retrospectively reviewed neonates with PAIVS who received ECMO between 2009 and 2019 in 19 US hospitals affiliated with the Collaborative Research for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (CoRe-PCICS).

Scimitar syndrome is a rare condition described by unique anatomic features that consist mainly of an abnormal connection of the right pulmonary veins to the inferior vena cava and right atrial junction, as well as an anomalous systemic arterial supply to the right lung. We present the case of a 60-year-old man with an atypical variant of scimitar syndrome that was embryologically perplexing and anatomically challenging to correct. We highlight key surgical and procedural considerations for a patient with scimitar syndrome presenting with this complex surgical anatomy.

Rhizostomeae species attract our attention because of their distinctive body shape, their large size and because of blooms of some species in coastal areas around the world. The impacts of these blooms on human activities, and the interest in consumable species and those of biotechnological value have led to a significant expansion of research into the physiology and functional biology of Rhizostomeae jellyfish over the last years. This review brings together information generated over these last decades on rhizostome body composition, locomotion, toxins, nutrition, respiration, growth, among other functional parameters.

This study presents the development and characterization of a novel porphyrin-Jeffamine polymer conjugate designed to function as a photosensitizer prodrug for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). The conjugate features a photosensitive porphyrin unit covalently attached to a biocompatible polymer backbone, with enhanced solubility, stability, and bioavailability compared to those of the free porphyrin derivatives. The photophysical properties were studied using transient absorption spectroscopy spanning the fs-μs time scales in addition to emission studies.

Free-swimming polychaetes are common in marine habitats and exhibit a unique form of swimming whereby a metachronal wave occurs simultaneously with a bending body wave. This body wave is unusual among swimming animals because it travels in the same direction as the animal's swimming direction. Ephyrae, the early stages of scyphozoan jellyfish, possess a conserved morphology among species.
