Transcranial direct current stimulation: a study on naming performance in aphasic individuals.

Purpose: Compare the results in naming tasks of after-stroke aphasic individuals divided into active and placebo groups pre- and post-transcranial direct current stimulation.

Methods: A double-blind, randomized, controlled study conducted with 14 individuals. Patients underwent five 20-min sessions with stimulation of 2mA's on consecutive days.

Radiographic and clinical outcomes of joint-preserving procedures for hallux valgus in rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: The standard treatment for hallux valgus in rheumatoid arthritis has been arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. There is limited literature regarding the results of hallux valgus procedures which preserve the first MTP joint in rheumatoid patients. We investigated the radiographic and clinical outcomes of joint-preserving surgery for hallux valgus in a series of rheumatoid patients to evaluate the result of nonarthrodesis reconstruction.

A novel approach to root coverage: the pinhole surgical technique.

Free connective tissue graft techniques are currently considered the most predictable surgical method for root coverage. However, morbidity associated with secondary graft sites has generated interest in other methods. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a novel surgical approach to root coverage: the pinhole surgical technique (PST).

Management of calcaneal tuberosity fractures.

Fractures of the calcaneal tuberosity are relatively uncommon and are seen most frequently in elderly and diabetic patients. These injuries are typically avulsion fractures caused by concentric contraction of the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle complex. Displacement of these fractures can compromise the skin over the posterior aspect of the heel; therefore, early recognition and management are imperative.

Molecular structure of amyloid fibrils formed by residues 127 to 147 of the human prion protein.

Amyloid fibrils are filamentous and insoluble forms of peptides or proteins. Proline has long been considered to be incompatible with the cross-beta structural motif of amyloid fibrils. On the basis of solid-state NMR spectroscopy data, we present a structural model of an in-register parallel beta sheet for the amyloid fibrils formed from a human prion protein fragment, huPrP(127-47).

Legg-calve-perthes disease: a review of cases with onset before six years of age.

Background: The prognosis for children in whom Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease develops before the age of six years was initially reported to be good, but later studies demonstrated a less favorable prognosis. To assess the natural history of this condition in this age group, we reviewed a large cohort of children who had received minimal treatment for the disease.

Methods: The medical records and radiographs of all children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease seen at our institution between 1944 and 2000 were reviewed.

Efficient spin-spin scalar coupling mediated C-13 homonuclear polarization transfer in biological solids without proton decoupling.

We demonstrate that an efficient C' <--> C alpha polarization transfer based on J-coupling can be realized under fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) condition without 1H decoupling. Experimental results are presented for model crystalline compounds as well as a non-crystalline 17-residue polypeptide MB(i + 4)EK. Measurements on MB(i + 4)EK demonstrate that 53% of the initial C' polarization was transferred to the cross peaks at 7.
