Long-term results of a randomized trial of surgery with or without preoperative chemotherapy in esophageal cancer.

Purpose: OEO2 is a randomized, controlled trial of preoperative chemotherapy in patients undergoing radical surgery for esophageal cancer. Random assignment was to surgery alone (S) or to two cycles of combination cisplatin and fluorouracil before surgery (CS). Initial results reported in 2002 demonstrated an advantage for both disease-free and overall survival in the CS group.

The role of ERCP in management of retained bile duct stones after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Background: Retained bile duct stones after cholecystectomy are an established entity. To find out the incidence of retained common bile duct (CBD) stones after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in our hospital, we conducted a retrospective study of patients who presented with symptomatic retained stones in the biliary system after a LC.

Methods: Between the period 1992-2000, 824 LCs were performed in our hospital.

Unusual presentation of Bouveret's syndrome.

Isolated gastric outlet and ileal obstruction are rare complications of gallstones. We report what we believe to be the first case of a gallstone causing gastric outlet obstruction while eroding into the duodenum, yet once in the duodenum, passing into the small bowel, causing ileal obstruction. The endoscopic appearance of the eroding gallstone was so unusual that it was initially mistaken for a fibrotic duodenal ulcer.
