This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The objectives are as follows: Our aim is to collect, assess, and synthesise all the available empirical evidence on what works to support evidence-informed decision-making by policymakers. In doing so, we will aim to answer the following research questions: What are the impacts of interventions to support evidence-informed decision-making by policymakers? What are the factors which have influenced the impact of these interventions, and their design and implementation in low- and middle-income countries? In answering these questions, our goal is to estimate the overall impact and relative effectiveness of different interventions, identify factors or configurations of factors that support or hinder their effectiveness in low- and middle-income countries and to identify gaps and areas for future primary research.

Background: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with perinatal death and adverse birth outcomes, as well as long-term complications, including increased childhood morbidity, abnormal neurodevelopment, and cardio-metabolic diseases in adulthood. Placental epigenetic reprogramming associated with FGR may mediate these long-term outcomes. Placental malaria (PM), characterized by sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in placental intervillous space, is the leading global cause of FGR, but its impact on placental epigenetics is unknown.

Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for Plasmodium falciparum commonly detect histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP-2), but HRP-2 deletions are increasingly recognized. We evaluated a prototype test detecting parasite lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) and compared it to commercially available RDTs at a health facility in Uganda, using quantitative polymerase chain reaction as a gold standard. The prototype pLDH test had a high sensitivity for infections with at least 100 parasites/µL (98%), comparable to HRP-2, and greater than an existing pLDH RDT (89%).

Objective: Placental malaria is a known risk factor for small for gestational age (SGA) neonates. However, currently utilized international and African birthweight standards have not controlled for placental malaria and/or lack obstetrical ultrasound dating. Background: In malaria-endemic areas, the first exposure to malaria antigens often occurs in utero when the fetal immune system is poised towards the development of tolerance. Children exposed to placental malaria have an increased risk of clinical malaria in the first few years of life compared to unexposed children. Recent work has suggested the potential of pregnancy-associated malaria to induce immune tolerance in children living in malaria-endemic areas.
